I wonder why someone from the city government has not made a comment.
I don't think this forum about
why the Rome Floyd County Fire Dept. has not moved forward ,like the rest of the fire service has,
is going away anytime soon.............like they hope .

Let's have some more discussion. There are issues that haven't even been brought up. And you guys from other departments, chime on in, tell us the differences in pay, retirement, staffing, safety procedures, etc...
And if you don't agree, flame away, I know how to stop, drop, and roll!!
These are all being covered elsewhere.
Lets hear those issues. I dont think that they will explain why the dept. is behind
To fudge and some of you other firefighters: How does your departments handle diesel smoke in the firehouse? Rome has three stations, 1, 9, and 10, that have potential health implications from the smoke and/or fumes. 9 and 10 are almost like living in a garage with your large diesel truck. #1 has living quarters directly over the bay, with two holes in the living quarters floor for the sliding poles that do not seal out the exhaust very well at all. Do you have this problem and if so, how is it handled.

| Ventilation systems, doors that do not lead directly to the living quarters, and no poles to slide. Send these ideas up the chain and see what response you get. I am interested as what will be said.

That is a concern but if I am not mistaken the new stations being built have a seperate building for the engines. OOOOPs progress.

Your right, and those new stations are nice! Of course I think it is exactly those conditions that required them to be built that way. And in the meantime, I guess those guys stationed there will continue to endure the living conditions for who knows how long.

I am glad to see this hasn't become the nasty let's bash someone personally forum or at least it hasn't yet. Bozilla states he wants to see some differences in departments so I will give the figures for Gwinnett where I am currently employed.
Pay Scales
All of these pay scales are on a 12 step progression. So it takes 12 years to top out in pay. Any classification with the exception of Firemedic gets a 10% addition for being a paramedic.
Firefighter I/EMT 33,248.00 - 53,232.00
Firefighter II/EMT 35,765.00 - 57,260.00
Firefighter III/EMT 38,479.00 - 61,606.00
Firemedic/Paramedic 38,479.00 - 61,606.00
Firefighter Driver Engineer/EMT 41,407.00 - 66,293.00
Firefighter Lieutenant/EMT 44,563.00 - 71,347.00
Firefighter Captain/EMT 50,866.00 - 81,438.00
Firefighter Battalion Chief/EMT 60,307.00 - 102,521.00
Firefighter District Commander 69,000.00 - 117,300.00
Lieutenants are the equivalent of RFD Captains. Captains ride Ladders (Trucks) and Squads at GCFES.
We have 4 Battalion Chiefs and 1 District Commander per shift. Soon to be 5 Battalion Chiefs.
I also have the numbers for Inspections and Investigations if anyone is interested.
Starting 01-01-10 to be promoted to Lieutenant or above you must be Paramedic certified.
Retirement
We have have a defined benefit retirement plan with a Rule of 75. Your age and time of service must equal 75. So most go at age 50 with 25 years of service. We also have a 30 and out exception, If you came on at 18 you can retire at age 48. Any age with 30 years, anytime with the rule of 75. The payout is 2.75% per year of service based upon your highest 60 months of consecutive pay. We pay in on a graduating scale from 5.5% to 7.25% .So if you put in 30 years you retire on 82.5% of your 60 highest months of pay. Add the Georgia Firefighters retirement fund and you have got a pretty good retirement. However that has changed recently and the new hires are now under a similar plan time wise but has a cash and carry option. It works similar to a 401K but you can draw sooner. This plan can run out if you live too long. The one I am under does not run out until death and has a survivor option also.
Operations
We operate 4 Battalions, 28 stations with Station 29 and 30 currently beginning construction. We are currently approved and preparing to build through Stations 31-34. Tentative plans have us to 43 stations within the next 10 years.
Per shift we are currently running 28 Engines, 6 soon to be 7 Ladders (trucks), 23 Rescues (Transport med units), 2 Manpower Squads (staffed with 4 including a Captain, Haz-mat certified), 2 MS officers (Medical command and safety officers, Lieutenants) 2- Air and light trucks, 1 dedicated Haz-Mat squad with 2nd available by shifting manpower from a squad. 4 Battalion Chiefs (soon to be 5) 1- Rehab unit, 1 District Chief, 1 PIO (Public Information Officer). Our specialty teams on shift are, Swift Water, Haz-Mat, Georgia Search and Rescue (Heavy), Special ops including Rope, Dirt and high angle). 2 Shuttle cars. (Car 98 and 99 shuttle personnel around when needed. Pick up manpower up from hospitals when they ride in from engines on med calls. Swap crews out at shift change on working fires.
A typical response to a Residential Fire:
3-Engines, 1 Truck, 1 Manpower Squad,1 rescue, 2 Battalion Chiefs, 1 Ms Officer. Air and Light on confirmation of working fire. (1 engine or squad becomes RIT on arrival, whoever gets there first).
A typical response to a Business or Apartment Fire:
4 Engines, 2 Trucks, 1 Squad, 1 Rescue, 2 Battalion Chiefs, 1 Division Commander. On confirmation of working fire: 1 PIO, 1 additional Engine and 1 additional truck (if needed).
A typical response to a medical call:
1 Engine, 1 Rescue (1 Shuttle car to hospital if needed.) 1 PD officer when available and near)
A typical response to a Gunshot or stabbing:
1 Engine, 1 Rescue, 1 Battalion Chief, (1 Shuttle car to hospital if needed.) 6000 PD officers (at least thats how many seem like show up) 1 always is dispatched with Fire.
Just a little information about where I work. If you want specific operational details about different calls, just ask.
Lot of information to digest, sorry so long, but you asked.

I also need to post about a conversation that I had today with an RFD firefighter. We got into a little back and forth PM conversation. We kept feeling each other out and I could tell he really wanted to be forthright with me. So after several minutes of this I disclosed my identity to him.( I was not on under this name, imagine you can have more than one name on here. Nobody would do that, would they? ) Anyways he went on to tell me that he really didn't like the way this was being done on here and didn't want anyone to be trashed in this forum. I agreed with him and went on to tell him how he could help me with what I am trying to do here. He knows there are problems with the department. He knows where the problems stem from and what should be done about it. Yet he maintained his honor, dignity and loyalty to the department.
I have got to say I was very impressed with this gentleman. He is a fine example of the men working for the Rome Fire Department. Everyone I have came into contact with has been very loyal to the department even though they all admit there are problems and they don't know if they will ever get any change, they maintain their loyalty. I respect that a whole lot. I wish everyone could work in an environment that held such brotherhood and honor to their profession.
As I told you (You know who you are)I will never divulge who you are, but I felt I needed to say this because you really impressed me. You sir, are an honorable gentleman!
