Yesterday as I was driving out Shorter Av. / Ga.20 on through Coosa into Alabama,it seems like a long drive. From Walmart to the state line is about 14 miles. This seems like a Very BIG AREA with no Fire Station to quickly cover.
Do any of you folks in that area worry about how long the response times would be to your house.I know there is a station off Shorter Ind,Blvd.,but what if they were out on another call when your house is hit by lightning & begins to burn.Or your family member has a heart attack & is not breathing.Brain death occurs within 5-6 minutes,a house fire doubles in size every 4 minutes.
It just seems like a huge area of Floyd County for big, heavy, slow, fire equipment to to get to quickly.
We seem to to shortchanged by fire coverage in many parts of the county.
I'm glad I live in Armuchee... about 2 miles from Station 8

There's also one on Burnette Ferry near Alto Park.
Between those 3 they should be able to cover the west end of the county pretty well.

| Those stations are not very deep into the county.I was thinking of a response near the state line.I guess there are not many calls in that area anyway.

| The station on Shorter Industrial Blvd is closed. Burnett Ferry Road and Woods Road are the stations for the area.

hmm. well, that is a good point, but I am sure the locations of the stations are based on population density. after all, you're more likely to have a fire where there are more houses closer together than fewer houses farther apart.

| the one on woods rd could be to the state line in 8-10 mins...................................................not the best response possible, but acceptable, especially considering there may be three businesses and 50 residences in the last few miles of alabama hwy..................................................................................................................

Good point RGS, I know they have to put resources where the greatest need is.
8-10 minutes is a long time if your not breathing or your child is trapped in your burning house. I just wonder if they can get to the state line in 10 minutes.
Thats the price to pay for living way out in the country

Sorry, I can name one station that really disproves that theory, Station 10.

It seems to me that this county could use a couple more fire stations.Lindale sure comes to mind, way out 411 is another area,as well as deeper into the Coosa area.
I don't know the run stats but I guess these areas get few calls,& city /county politicians keep HOPING nothing too major happens there.
I would like a Rome Fire Officer to give some information on the response times for first & second due engines for those areas. If the first due station is out on another call how long wil the next due be?

Response times MUST be available somewhere.Probably in the big chiefs file cabinet under ........Floyd County Fire Response Times.
Any of you Rome FF know how to get your hands on that info,or can tell us citizens how to get it?
It would be SO nice for someone to post it for us.

Not too much interest in fire response times..................unless it's your house burning to the ground.
But whats the chance on that happening? Remember most of these fire engines carry 3 ff,one is the driver- pump operator, leaving 1 ff & 1 captain to carry out all the tasks needed in the first few minutes. When sent, the one Ladder truck carries 2 ff,who are just manpower, not a real truck company performing truck co. tasks.
NFPA standards call for 12-15 ff to arrive within the first 5-8 minutes to be effective !!

| to be honest i think that we have one of the best fire depts around....and the best response times with the fire dept...i've worked around it for 8yrs and not once i have ever heard another agency asking for the eta of the fire dept bc they usually get their first...nor have i heard anyone complaining about how long it took them to get there....and if it does take a little longer ,those are the people that are already aware that they do live far out and they expect that...but yes fire response times are available....prob at fire prevention on e 12th..
