It is not known that our county hospital (Floyd Medical) is one of the most unsecured establishments in Floyd County. Floyd is a great place to work and one of the largest employers in the county. Not only that but the citizens of this county and the surrounding counties rely on Floyd for excellent medical care. Over the last several years I have noticed how bad security is. There is constantly thefts, vandalism, and "covered up" crimes. Homeless people are living in areas due to doors that are left unlocked and unmanned 24 hours a day where anyone can enter at anytime. There is a growing concern and fear by employees of not only personal safety but also the security of personal confidential information. In my tenure as a nurse at Floyd I know it has not always been this way. Floyd has spent millions on renovations to become a leader in healthcare while apparently ignoring security and the security department.
The security guards are perceived by myself and my peers as useless and unprofessional. This has to stem directly from the management of the department or whoever is over them. They consistently make bad decisions on issues that affect the safety of every employee and patient. One such individual is very rude and obnoxious. Here are just a few of the obvious examples of uneducated decisions:
Consistent hiring of incompetent mentally and physically impaired individuals who cannot perform the duties of a security guard. The few experienced knowledgeable employees are in obscure positions performing menial tasks.
They do not have a way of immediately communicating with other guards or other hospital areas or emergency entities. At one point they had no communication at all because a guard came to my desk to use the phone when a disoriented patient was lost.
Guards do not have keys to all areas of the hospital to lock and unlock doors in times of emergency. Management took the keys away.
The uniforms are rag tag and do not communicate a perception of authority and the guards carry nothing in the way of personal protection.
I could go on and will if anyone wants to know more.
I am putting this issue through the proper channels at the hospital but wanted to see what law enforcement and other citizens thought about it on this forum.

As in any large hospital, security is considered both ancillary and something to be tolerated. In addition, they don't want people in these positions who are going to be thinking much and enforcing regulations.
the FMC ER doesn't have that problem though. There are real cops there who will handle whatever comes up, or whoever chooses to start it

I'd say the ER, is probably one of the safest ERs in the state.............there are usually three off-duty, uniformed, sworn officers there at all times..........................their duties are to watch the mental patients, but they will step up and handle any problems...........................break the law in the ER, you'll probably go to jail..................................................
as far as the rest of the hospital, I'm unfamiliar with that, so I take you at your word.............................................I agree with what BillT is implying.........................you give security guards actually authority to remedy the situation, you'll have a bunch of folks complaining..............................imagine if they actually enforced visitation hours, parking, etc..........................................LOL

Yup nothing like letting a delusional person on meds have a gun around pure oxygen tanks and nuclear waste.

| Two places I will always argue guns should never ever be except by trained agents (police or guard) is hospitals and schools.

my belive is the only two places where law-abiding citizens who take the time to get a GFL shouldnt have weapons are Courthouses/Police Stations and Jails

I would write a thank you note to my legislators for making sure that criminals werent supposed to have a gun

I think the teachers should lay down if a deranged person enters my childs school........and return suppressive fire.

Geez RGS, I know you're being sarcatic but maybe others don't. I haven't ever felt unsafe at a hospital. Stupid me. I thought the security guards were trained professionals. Something not to notice unless you have need of them. As of today I have to question the reasoning and observation abilities of the local small town police department in my area. I guess what I'm getting at is I now have to question just how safe we are reguardless of the presence of a badge. Some are really not qualified to wear one.

| I too work at FMC and over the years the security guards or what most call social security guards are under trained and understaffed. I for one believe that it comes from the upper management though because they refuse to allow them to do their jobs, they will not allow them to be rude to patients or families in any situation. All they are allowed to do is speak nicely and try to persuade someone to be calm and cooperate but if the person refuses then they call the real police. It's a joke. The other day i was trying to get in touch with security for a particular reason and the switchboard had no way of getting in touch with them for over 30 mins. Scary huh. It is much worse at night, many of my co-workers refuse to walk outside the hospital or to the first floor alone for fear of their safety, so naturally i always have to escort them. The homeless folks find FMC a safe haven though, they come in and sleep in the waiting areas and other places in the hosp. Also there are several different ways that anyone can come in at night unseen. I worked for hamilton up in dalton a few years ago and they had armed police officers all over the hospital not just in the er, and they enforced the rules. They are much smaller than FMC but they do care for the safety of patients and staff. Like i said though i think it comes from the UPPER management because they have always treated staff like security, maintenance and even EMS like they were worthless and not important but that's just another day at FMC.

Once again you point to a popular situation that happened so fast no one really could have stopped it. There has been other situations that similar happened, and a student did return fire, killing 2 other innocent people because the kid thought he was protecting himself and shot the wrong people. Then freaked out and tried to tell the police who responded to the first shooting he did not mean to, only prob he was waving a gun so was shot himself.
Yup makes me feel safer then having actual trained guards doing the job correctly and with support.
