So I heard that if you are a Floyd County Police Officer and you have a drive home car you must log your miles and pay for the gas. Meaning if you work an extra job as a police officer you take your car. WOW what are we saying about our Officers? We really need your services and you're going to get paid for them however we want you to pay for the gas to service us as well? I am at a loss for words on this one.

I don't know if that's true but I personally have no problem with it and here's why (before you yell at me).

I am provided taxpayer gas back and forth to work.  If I work an approved extra job, my agency doesn't take one penny for my work and they provide me coverage.  If they want me to pay for the gasoline used to make that money, I will do so

Is the extra job actually work for Floyd County or is it security work at another business?  If its work for the county, then the gas should be paid for by the county. If not, then the county shouldn't have to pay for that gas.

you can yell at me too......

the gas you use for your job, and also wear and tear on your veh is tax deductable

if it's a 2nd job, the officer should be accountable for that gas, it's an initial payout, but at the end of the year when it's tax time, it really comes in hand to have an extra deduction.

if an officer has a take home car, and they get off work or are on the way to work they rarely go straight to work/home.  There is always a broken down car, or a call that they are right on top of and because of commitment and duty the officer stops and handles it.  Officer rountinely have to leave for work 30 - 1hour early to get to work for this very reason.

Here is what should happen then.............the officer can start charging the county for every minute worked, since they have a duty to respond.  They also have the right to do this by FLSA standards.  I bet that time and half over 86 hours sure will add up to more than fuel expenses.  I know officers that give and continue to give hours and hours to the county because they are dedicated to the county and the job/department and don't want to bring heat on the agency heads for overtime issues.  Simple fix............this will more than cover the amount of gas that the officer has to pay.  Sounds good to me!

ok, so get this...........................got a phone call this morning...................................remember that floyd county police department had NINE, count 'em NINE rookies start the police academy back in January??????

FOUR are still working for Floyd County Police..........................One of the rookies, Finished his academy, field training, departmental training and other required specialized training (5 months worth total) and then quit the same day he finished to go to work for Polk County Police Department..................................................That is a lot of money the county invested in someone for Polk County...................................

Another officer, with about a year with floyd county police department, quit the SAME DAY to go to Polk County Police, but it is believed that he changed his mind after being promised that things would get better...........................................................I feel sorry for him as I was made those same promises, years ago, and eventually realized the people making those promises were not in a position to keep them..................................and as most officers with floyd county eventually do, I went elsewhere

of course. For the County, County pays the gas.  For another job, I will gladly pay the gas

RGS, Looks like your prophecy is coming true, in addition to the one who have gone about a year ago, plus these above, I heard the Sheriff's Office is losing a few to Bartow!

I saw a police officer a few weeks ago on the side of the road with some high school looking students and what appeared to be a car that was just not going to go anymore. I saw that officer at or around 1610, or 4:10pm. He was talking on his radio, to what I guess would be a wrecker. I went to the local super store, got some groceries, looked at some pool stuff and came back by the same dead vehicle, students, and officer. It was nearly 1800, 6pm by then. This location was on his way home. I wonder if he got paid for that extra almost 2 hours that he spent there with those students?

The answer I bet was no. Aren't the officers supposed to answer calls in their area to and from their school location or to and from their home location? And if the officer takes the car to the Fourm to their 2nd job and for some reason takes a person to jail they have to pay for that gas too. I just feel like maybe we need to look at other things here besides doubling up on officers and such. Does any one know how to get in touch with that is it Mariacopia Co Sheriff in Arizona that has a very small budget? The one that has the tent city and the animal control on a very tight leash. No pun intended. Maybe we could get some ideas from him. Maybe we could get some of those great looking County officers to mount up on some Harley's too. Yeah now I think that would solve a lot. Saves the gas and time. Oh tell me who to call.

it's wonderful the dedication that our floyd co officers and sheriff deputies have, it's awful that we can't keep good, loyal and dedicated people........

it is also awful that they must face the challenge of their duties along with the challenging distraction of trying to keep up with budgetary cutbacks...especially on important life saving equipment like tasers!!!!  I approve of them, not only do they save the life of the officer....but in less drastic cases, can save the life of the suspect.

....we are all in a crisis here....we are all trying to make our monthly budgets work on less and less money.....from my perspective my first obligation is my child....my child will be fed and clothed come heck or highwater.....

why is the city and county govts acting as if all of it's citizens are it's step-children who only deserve the crumbs off the crusts of bread it throw to the wolves???? why is our security and safety second rate to new and improved foot bridges that could have been put off for a few more years....

why not spend that money to improve the security around the wonderfully beautiful tressel bridge??? It's to the point, I will not walk on either bridge...I don't feel safe, even in the middle of the day......

Is anyone in county/city government listening to it's citizens???? Can they tell us....

why county government treats its PD and Sheriff depts like 2nd rate security ...why must our highly trained, loyal, and professional depts look elsewhere to try to feed their children????

My vote may not count for much....but it is my voice and as a tax paying citizen of this county it will count for improvements come election time....

Phantom I agree. I think that there is plenty of money for our officers out there but certain people won't let go of it. Tell me how many uniforms or protective vests or even raises the foot bridge money could have bought. I did see a LOT of people using it over the last few days for getting to the many "events" at the Fourm, but we don't have a lot going on down there to give it credit for not getting the officers the raises they deserve. Yeah I hear that a raise is on the way. WOW a whopping 10% or so. Whew but how much will the good 'ole BCBS go up? yeah it's gonna rise as well and take all of the raise. I know that we can't give everyone everything. BUT we can try to compromise. I just can't figure out wehre to start.

Here is a brainstorm for you...............the county understands and agrees that their Law enforcement is already way behind in pay, benefits, equiptment, almost to the point of never catching up realistically, so when money gets a little tight...............they wanna trim the fat of the budget by going straight at public safety and then on top of that making them pick up an additonal monitary burden to put them further behind...........................I see the water swirling just before the drain.

Somebody tell us why the insurance is so high compared to other counties our size or smaller.....................why is it not close?????

of course I do this to rub it in....................

$44.00 every two weeks for family coverage.  My hospital stay has cost me zero out of pocket.  This is one of the major areas where we simply are better taken care of than our Floyd Co. brethren and sistren.  But certainly not the only area.  I understand that you guys pay 3 and 4 times that every two weeks
