Just as I and many overs have thought, crime has skyrocketed this year. If you didn't think so, just look at below.
Captain Autry who is the commander of the investigative unit gave the Committee anoverview on activities within the police department. He reported that from January 1 toApril 30 of this year as opposed to this same time last year, thefts were up 22%, robberies up 50%, burglaries up 40%, and fraud and forgery up over 137%. These crimes areincreasing in other agencies as well due mainly to the economy. He also reported a big problem with graffiti.
This is an excerpt from the rome city public safety committee meeting on may 20th. So, we're being told that it's in the city's best interests to cut the amount of patrol cars in half at night? Regardless of whats being said, crime is waaaay up. That means the officers are gonna be (and have already been) responding to a lot more calls. More calls + less cars to respond to those calls = long response times, and decreased coverage!!!!!
They said that this effort is only saving the city 10,000 dollars. In the scheme of govt thats not alot. I'm sure there is a way to save that much money somewhere else, somewhere that won't decrease the safety of the community. My husband's friends said the dept is trying to sell it to the officers as a "safety issue". If it's safety issue, did they not care about their people safety for the past 10 years when they only rode one to a car? If it doesnt affect "coverage" or "response times", why have they had so many cars on the road for the past ten years, why do they employ as many officers as they do, and why do they buy so many new police cars every year?
It's funny how they say that this method is just a safe and is a good idea, when they've never done for the past 10 or more years. If they are telling the truth (and the devil is obviously in the details), then why have they been allowed to waste sooo much precious money and resources on people, cars, and time?

| I have already voiced my thoughts about SPLOST. I would vote for one if all the money went to our protectors.

I hear tell that there is a citizens group, non-law enforcement only, forming in Rome at this time..............................their intent is to support the county law enforcement in their quest for fair pay.....................................................................
when Mayor McCheese talks about "the devil is in the details" he could not be more correct.........................................of course we all know I have contacts in the county police and sheriff..................................now listen to this wonderful plan.........................the police are making their guys, with patrol cars, pay monthly for any mileage they use on off-duty jobs, at a rate of 25 cents per mile................................Many of the officers will be writing checks for 1, 2, 3, 4 or maybe even 5 dollars (there's a gallon) (remember, these guys are logging half-miles or 1 and MAYBE 2 miles for going to work Floyd Medical Center, parking lots, Braves' games, the Forum (yeah, there's a drive), etc etc etc at the end of their "real job" shift..................another off duty job, was actually paying to fill up the tanks at the end of the officers' shifts (they're directing traffic around construction sites), but now they will no longer do this..................................what the county hasn't considered is that fact that most of the these officers ALREADY were replenishing the fuel tanks prior to returning to on-duty, at their own expense...........................and most of the officers would not figure up the exact mileage and fuel, they would just top off the tank and eat the loss (like they do on answering calls on their way to and from work)................................................so, the county, in its infinite wisdom has probably made their fuel costs RISE through this new idea..................................

and let me say...........................................................remember
the situation the police are in, is their own fault.....................it has degraded from a brotherhood into a situation where some of the people are looking for other jobs..............some are too stupid to realize they're getting screwed...............and the rest are happy because every time someone leaves, they gain seniority..................................
Cops nowadays are not like they were in the past...........................................they not only refuse to stick together, they celebrate the opportunity to screw another officer..............................................................For any stupid idea that the county commission, county manager or county management puts in place, there will be suckups there to pat them on the back and say "thank you for screwing us..............you're doing a wonderful job"...............

I noticed that the county has jumped on the city's "Save the gas" band wagon. One of my friends at the county told me that they too are having to partner up after 9pm. An already skeleton crew police force is now putting less cars on the road.
wow.

Read earlier where the city commissioners are "watching this forum". Well, their silence is deafening. As always they are completely unwilling to prevent a problem from getting worse. As earlier stated, the devil's in the details. It's clear that crime on the steady increase, with no prospect of decreasing in the near future. Anyone with the ability to reason understands than decreasing coverage and increasing response times should be a huge concern. No one's mentioned this concept, but during a violatile situation, such as a large fight or disturbance, the more patrol cars you can put on the scene, the quicker the situation will de-escilate. It's the concept of "a show of force". Given, that under the "new system" (i prefer to call it the "new deal") you would still have the same amount of officers on the scene. However, there is a considerable difference to having 4 policemen in 2 cars on the scene, than having 4 policemen in four cars. It creates the impression that there is a lot of policemen there, which is good.
Yet, the problem persist...
If one were to use this forum as a snapshot of the community, then it is obvious that this snapshot is opposed to the "new deal". With this system the rewards are small and the risks are large. If our ELECTED leaders have any sense about them, it would do them well to lense to the "commoners" that elected them, and probe into this matter. IF they are probing into this matter, it would be nice for them to tell us "Hey, despite popular opinion, we are doing our jobs and will have this matter resolved with the swiftness".
Yet, the silence remains...

It's definately not a dream it's a nightmare!
With the city deciding that the safety of it's community was less important than saving a few dimes on gas, I said "Well, thank God I live in the county". Now, I see that the county is doing the same thing. How many houses will have to be broken in to, how manys more robberies and thefts, and shootings will it take??????

What would you have SPLOST funds go toward to help LE? Keeping in mind that SPLOST funds can only be spent on Capital projects.
