Interestingly enough, you will find a higher percentage of people from the left side of the political spectrum who not only will say "I hate:", but will try to control other people to the extent that they will use junk science as a prop for their beliefs.
I say that those of us on the right (read: opposite of wrong, thankyouverymuch) smother them with kindness and pray they get with the program.
Show me the conclusive proof that Everyone Who Smokes dies of cancer or any other related illness, and show me the conclusive proof that Anyone Who Has Ever Been Exposed to second hand smoke can be proven to have contracted something that the smoke caused.
*hint, there's not any.

Gosh, Waterhead, you have addressed the smoking debate from so many angles that I'm not sure where to start. mmmm.... I'll leave the political one alone and just focus on the above text.
You are correct.... there is NOT any scientific, conclusive proof that EVERYONE who smokes or is subjected to second-hand smoke becomes sick or dies. Lucky you.... you have found a really good reason to continue smoking. The medical link between smoking and certain diseases has been established, but as long as there is one 90 year-old alive happily puffing away without any apparent health ramifications, by all means, use him/her as an example that smoking isn't bad for your health. ::wink, wink::
You are an adult. If you choose to smoke, that is your business. I, for one, will not try to coerce you into quitting, but, please don't even bother trying to throw up a smokescreen (pardon the pun).

Yes, it is, however, it is still your choice as to whether you want to smoke or not and I will not hate you for it.

Agreed. I should elaborate further. What I meant to say was, "Is smoking really all that bad compared to so many other things in this world?" However, you are absolutely right; smoking is a bad thing.
Is smoking any worse than running a red light because you got tired of waiting for it? In return, hitting a guy on a motorcycle? Oh wait a second, I just read that on RNW.
My main point is simple. Everyone does something stupid. In return, everyone is punished in one way or another.
Thanks!

I'm going to post this here because it is related to smokers.
My daughter was taking Chantex (I hope I spelled it correctly) to quit smoking when she was killed in an auto accident. I have just this past week, come across several reports regarding people who have been in accidents while taking it and in one case, the report said the doctor had traced it back to the Chantex. The passenger who was in the vehicle, said the mans eyes suddenly rolled back in his head and he went off the road into a pond. They both survived. In my daughters case, the road was wet and she was probably driving too fast but I thought about the connection with the Chantex and thought I would post this in case any of you are using it or thinking about using it. Just be aware that there may be a danger in taking it.
I am very sorry for your loss. And the problem may be far worse than what you've described. The Federal Aviation Administration has **banned** Chantex for use by all pilots. A pretty bold move unless there is pretty compelling evidence

I didn't know about that. The articles I read were all auto accidents. I certainly don't know that Chantex had any thing to do with her accident, the thought only occurred to me after I read the articles. I just thought that anyone taking it or considering taking it should be aware that there could be problems.

Smoking smells bad, can cause cancer in some people, causes reduced lung function in most. Should I force my personal preferences about it on others NO. Should government legislate those beliefs...NO
Should Lunkhead be allowed his belief or hate without being criticized for it... YES
Why cant we just worry about our lives without trying to dictate our values and beliefs on others?

Smoking in and of itself is bad for the smoker although I agree with you in most respects. I think when someone says I hate smokers or I cannot stand smokers they are actually saying smokers that dont give a rip about where they smoke or who is around to inhale the smoke. I quit smoking almost 4 months ago. YAY me. I quit smoking because I had the flu, bronchitis, and a stomach bug all in one glorious filled week. I couldnt breathe when I didnt smoke so I took a puff said yuck and threw it out and havent had one since. I understand it is hard to quit. When I smoked, I NEVER smoked in my house, around me children, or at events with my children. If my children came outside I put it out. Not before they saw it, they knew. I just didnt want them around the smoke. Is that extreme? Maybe. But my oldest..the famous one armed wonder..has asthma to the point of taking Nasonex, Singulair, Advair, albuterol metered dose inhaler, and albuterol unit dose via nebulizer if it gets bad. So, I say I cannot stand smokers who will be in a crowd of people and light up not caring who is around. Example..we were standing in line to enter the stadium Saturday afternoon and the guy in front of us lit up. He didnt leave the line or anything. Just lit up with my 11-year-old and 4-year-old right behind him. That bothered me. And you know what..it would bother me if the alcoholic started knocking one right after the other back in front of me or the depressed person started horribly crying and saying she wanted to kill herself (those were your examples) around my children. Its your habit..its your right but it would be nice to get up and walk away so the rest of us (asthmatic children) dont have to breathe it in. Same thing happened at Sonic. A lady lit up right next to us and the wind was blowing it right in her face. She covered her mouth and got up to walk away (my daughter). The lady gives me a nasty look and says do I need to go somewhere else and I said thank you, that would be nice with a big smile on my face and she walked away mumbling b**ch about me. OH well...
I know what it is like to need one but if I can move away from everyone and do it without bothering others, so can all the other smokers in the blessed world. If I come into a bar with her and ask you to put it out because of her, kick my arse back out the door because that is just dumb. Otherwise, be considerate.

I wasnt talking about anyone on here and their smoking habits ROP. I totally agree with you about your house. You can smoke away all you want to. I can seriously see both sides as I smoked for 9 years. I didnt even smoke a half pack but I smoked. Even when I smoked, I didnt go to a couple of my own family's home because they smoked. They got mad at me and talked about me behind my back (never works in my family because they all tell). I never complained to them, I just chose not to go over there because of the smoke and my children. And you can come to my house if you want BUT only smoke outside in the designated areas. I will leave a gatorade bottle out there for ya
