| I know I mispelled it, It is a Mexican Holiday celebrated in this country. Supposedly celebrating their independance.....ain't true. They claim we took a lot of America from them, history, who did they take their land from? Think about it.

Yep, this time of year makes me miss my granddaddy. Colonel in the USAF, long retired in Warner Robins before dying two years ago of bladder cancer. He used to take me out with him every 4th of July morning, Memorial Day, Flag Day, etc. to put up the flag in front of their house. I remember standing by him, came up to his knee, watching him salute. I loved that. Every 4th of July we'd raise the flag together in the morning, then he'd go up to the city festivities and sell vidalia onions for the Exchange Club. In the evening he'd make us the best hamburgers while listening to Glenn Miller tunes on the radio on the carport, and he always had some piece of wood or something to whittle while I played around in the front yard. I do miss him. When I think of Independence Day, I think of him and everything he loved and everything he represents.

I am very proud to be American, and very proud of our military, but I would like to point out that one of the true meanings of the 4th has not been mentioned.
May all those ordinary citizens that stood up and fought tyranny and hard taxes, had their families threatened and bullied but still stood resolute until the end, signing a document that meant their death warrant. May the last of the good and true decent politicians rest well with honors earned in glory.

Cinco De Mayo is actually the anniversary of the Mexican's victory against the French at the Battle of Pueblo.
That may be the only thing I learned in Spanish

Hey...we celebrate other "stealth" holidays. Did you know we celebrate Vladimir Lenin's birthday? We call it something different. We call it "Earth Day."
any coincidence that the radical environmental movement selected the birthday of an anti-capitalist icon for their holiday? i think not.

| Well the last of our friends and family have left. I really got to enjoy this day, did not have to spend 3+ hours cooking. Got to spend time with the folks. Only had about 50% of normal as we have lost some and others are starting their own traditions. My brother in law and I have been trying to pass this cooking tradition down to the youngans, but they still show up in time to eat. My niece did bring a cooked boston butt and it was delicious. I hope everyone had a great day, got to get ready for the fireworks and make sure my magazines are loaded...........dang meant to get some 12 guage blanks, when I fire one of those off, the whole neighborhood gets quiet.

My husband works in Washington, DC during the week, so we went up there (still here in fact!) to celebrate the 4th.
We spent the morning of the 4th walking around Arlington Cemetery and made a point to spend a while at the tomb of the unknown soldier. There were hundreds of people standing around and no one said a word during the changing of the guard.
We also saw where JFK was buried, the statue of Iwo Jima (which by the way is HUGE), and the memorial to the astronauts who died on the Challenger and the Columbia. Everyone should come up here and see this. Walking around the cemetery was so sad when you realized that the majority of these people served our country and died for it. We walked around for hours and still only saw about 1/4 of the entire cemetery, but the enormity of it has stayed with me and probably always will.
Later on in the day, we went to the Archives and looked at the Declaration of Independence. It took so long to get in, but it was so worth it. We then watched a concert that featured Huey Lewis and the News, Taylor Hicks, Jerry Lee Lewis, and a bunch of other people I've never heard of. Just as Jerry Lee Lewis was finishing up, we watched the most spectacular fireworks show with 400,000 (or so) of our closest friends.
Although I'm sunburned and feel like I've been beat with a bag of oranges, I have to say that this was one of the best fourth of July's that I've ever had.
