We have decided to move our son to Model Middle when school starts back, he will start 6th grade.  I'm wondering if anyone has any idea where he could meet kids before starting a new school where he knows no one?  I was thinking along the lines of a camp, but to my knowledge there's nothing in our area.  In Garden Lakes, there's the Anthony Center and Lindale has a center also, but I don't know of anything our way.  This is going to be a really hard time for him and any help would be greatly appreciated!

I'm laughing because I'd never take him there until he does know others. But, the park in Shannon at certain times of the day, not morning, and don't hover over him; bring him to Calvary Baptist Church - the youth group is amazing and kids are from all over but Model has a good showing and they participate everywhere (he might already know some of them); and Etowah Park when games are on so he can 'be cool' and especially if he likes to skateboard (if he doesn't, get him one - he will soon).

Some of this also depends on how much freedom he has and how familiar you are with the area. Example: the boys play ball on the streets of the village so we're aware that they'll be there. But until your son knows the kids, he won't be included.

I'll ask around. How old is he and what grade? My grandgirls' half-brother is going into seventh so his buddies meet him all over Shannon.

He does like to skateboard and he does go to etowah on occasion, but has not really made any friends there.  All I can think of is the skating rink, but I won't leave him and who can make friends with mommy there?!!!  We don't live near any kids his age, so I'm lost!  I was hoping someone may take their kids somewhere I don't know about!

Does he play sports? If so, the rec. dept. sets up teams by school districts (football--fall and baseball--spring). Most 6th graders still play for the rec. in those sports. Also, Dykes Creek Baptist Church sponsors Upward b-ball in the winter.

I think the Rec. Dept. has some summer camp opportunities based out of the Shannon Park--you could call 706-291-0766 to find out what is still going on.

Once school starts, it would be really good to get him involved in a group that he shares an interest with. The school offers band (a class), chorus (a class), cross country, wrestling, etc. that he could easily join.

He does play sports, but has always played for the school district he was in at the time, never anything for Model.  Thank you so much for the Shannon Park idea, that's what I was looking for, but I did not know they offered anything out there!  I have already called them, so hopefully they will have some spots open:)

You know, you can "leave" him without "leaving" him.  You just have to drop him at the door so he can go in by himself and then park and go in and sit at one of the tables.  Just make sure you exit to the car at the appropriate time...lol

Shannon has a camp..but does the Shannon area go to Model or am I wrong?  I am not familiar with that area at all and get lost on a routine basis trying to figure it out.  If it is not Wayside or immediately off that or calhoun I have no clue.

If Shannon area does go to Model, this is the information:

Camp Shannon

Cost: $59/wk

Time: 7:30 am -6 pm (M-F)
Ages: 6 -14
Kids will enjoy a variety of activities including swimming, crafts, indoor/outdoor sports and games. Weekly themes include Drama Week where kids will put on a play.  Art week will feature a gallery event and Entertainment week will allow kids to focus on their favorite type of interactive fun.

Where is the camp physically located, what's the name, and who runs it?

I personally wish there was a technology oriented camp around here that was inexpensive. By God if I were a wealthy person, I'd build about 20 machines and run my own tech camp for free, and get kids started in technology so they would be prepared for the future.

Computer classes in schools are a joke. Kids just about all know how to use a computer, but do they know jack about the command line? Basic programming? What makes a computer tick, how to work on one?

I feel that Rome needs to try its best to move towards tech jobs instead of "grunt" work. The geographic location as well as the "ethereal" location give us a great advantage, and we need to grasp it and run with it. The East Coast silicon valley? Why not? Kid Tech Camps would be a great start.

Excellant idea Waterhead. Why not start it as a non profit organization and apply for all those government grants to get it off the ground?

I agree with Waterhead. We need to be teaching them more advanced computer skills than we are now...and I wish they taught money management in High School, but that's another story, LOL. BTW, although not a Tech camp, Camp Invention was awesome and well worth it for DS, but we signed up WAY early and it was still $180 for one kid.
Back to the topic: the phone # listed for Camp Shannon is the RFPRA phone #, so I would assume it is an RFPRA summer camp.

It is a RFPRA camp but I can say I have nieces and nephews at camp anthony and they love it.  they keep them entertained and doing stuff instead of sitting around socializing.  I have also been going to the pool a lot and I always ask how many camps are coming on the days we are interested in just so my 4-year-old doesnt get ran over (swam over?).  Last week Camp Shannon was coming on Friday and the woman told me they were a great bunch of kids with some really good camp leaders and they would be fine.  We went ahead and went during the camp's time and they were very well behaved and the instrutors were right there with them helping and correcting when needed.  That was a nice change.  The lifeguards end up babysitting for some of those other camps.  Thats a great price too.  The anthony center is 75 a week.  Why is they charge more.  Does it have to do with the facilities or who can pay more?  I am sorry..who they THINK they can pay more.

Hmm, that is a head scratcher... I know there are several different kinds of camps going on @ RFPRA at slight ly different prices-- maybe the one @ Anthony offers something different from the one @ Shannon? I dunno.
