I walked over the David Do$$ bridge this weekend and I think it would be a thrill for those that have never walked over a bridge before.

lately, ive been walking on the bridge, and i noticed that the light fixtures were made in italy. ...its too bad that you cant really enjoy them because some king of large insect surrounds the lights..and completely covers them up...(a swarm if you will) at night and makes quite a nuisance of themselves. also... the parking lot at the other end offers a view to the closed barron stadium...which was once a great place for fellow romans to walk and exercise, but now has a big contractor fence surrounding it keeping people out....just exactly...what are they going to do with the stadium?...and what about all the people who used to enjoy walking there on the softer track turf...well... i guess they will have to walk on the many miles of concrete trails/sidewalks that run alongside the rivers..(and meet and greet Rome's Homeless Population who... occupy the gazebo' near the 2nd avenue walk bridge, until the shelters open...and the limited few who like to occupy the space under the 2nd avenue and 5th avenue bridge after sunset. ...makes for an interesting walk with the wife and two kids... we meet such interesting folks, in the evenings. we love our social hour with the indigent populace.. we have exchanged ideas...and recipe's..and overall living experiences... always a big delight -every night...and we never really know whos around the next corner.(in the not-so- lit up spaces under each bridge and walkway...... below the levie..along the ball fields and parallel to west 3rd. by the way i found out that there is a really great place to sleep under the ''new bridge''.... it is on the steep incline under the north part of the new bridge''...it really keeps the rain off, and...as a plus...you can see if anyone is coming.... its well lit under there... and...technically...there is no sign posted there yet stating that it is unlawful to remain under the bridge after sunset.... like the signs by the commission that were posted under all the other bridges.. so if my wife puts me out...and i dont have anywhere to go... i can always count''on the new bridge...to provide me shelter..... so every one benefits from the new bridge.... from the scenic viewers to the -not so- scenic viewers...and all walks of life in between..... a bridge to benefit all!.... thanks rome...for making this beautiful bridge..... such scenic downtown.....and...a little bit -of shelter from the rain!...

Hello RomeGeorgiaMan, I'm fine thanks. Recently I made a picture of a man fishing on the bank beneath our first walking bridge--there at the forks. I'm sure you would probably like to see it. I will post it when I get the pixels reduced.

Dear ROP and 1stAndGoal, You have been reading the News! And caught that David Do$$ [and his partner Tom Hackett] et al do want the taxpayers to finance them some money making schemes at the other end of that bridge. But strangers here reading the SIGN, not our News would be shocked But that David Do$$ or anyone else would want to make money destroying a national historic site (whether or not people have yet been honest enough or energetic or fast enough to get it onto the National Register yet) sacred to the Cherokees and to all decent people, and committing the crime of destroying GRAVES, in violation of O.C.G.A. ยง 31-21-44 (C), is even more shocking I have given David Do$$ et al the benefit of the doubt, that previously he, his partner/s (and the City of Rome) may not have known that their W. 3rd St. Redevelopment Plans intrude on Cherokee Chief John Ross's home site and GRAVES of his father and child near the homesite--and even more tragic: Major Ridge's home "Chieftains" is listed as a site on the National Trail of Tears Register but the persons who arranged that did not get the CHIEF'S, CHIEF JOHN ROSS'S homesite listed--his history has been too well buried here--Yet there would have been NO TRAIL OF TEARS IF THE CHIEF AND HIS FAMILY HAD NOT BEEN DRIVEN FROM THEIR HOME! Chief Ross lost that fight against the illegal treaty (Major Ridge signed it without authority) by only one vote in the U. S. Congress! If Ridge and his few friends had not signed the illegal treaty to give it some semblance of legality that one vote and others would have gone against it. Major Ridge is therefore to blame for that tragic trail on which so many Cherokees died. He was rightly executed in accordance with their law and the death penalty given for disposing of more Cherokee land (It was not "murder" as signs at "Chieftains" [also misnamed] wrongly state. Yes Major Ridge started that Trail of Tears--still there would have been NO TRAIL OF TEARS IF THE CHIEF HAD GOTTEN ONE MORE VOTE IN CONGRESS--NO TRAIL OF TEARS IF THE CHIEF HAD NOT BEEN DRIVEN FROM HIS HOME. The Heroic Chief Ross should not be honored less than Ridge who's turning against the will of his people caused so many of their deaths on That Trail of Tears. And that sacred soil on which Chief Ross's home was and where his father and child's GRAVES are, should be listed on the National Register of Historic Places.) I did not discover the location of Chief Ross's home until the last few years--and I was born here 75 years ago--Even our latest Rome History books do not tell it. Roger Aycock and George McGruder Battey's books come the closest of any books to telling where Chief Ross's home was--but I still had to do research in the 1920 census books compared to current addresses, old newspapers, and superimpose the 1832 Land Lottery plat over the new tax map to see exactly where the house was--as was compatible too with the various references. Even the RNT would not publish my Chief Ross house research, updates, and discovery--though fortunately they did at least publish the 1832 Plat showing where the house was on LL-244, in their 1997 Past Times Magazine. (Still it had to be matched to scale with modern maps and compared to various references in Battey and Aycocks books.) So I gave David Do$$ and the City Officials and others the benefit of the doubt--that MAYBE THEY JUST DID NOT KNOW--like I did NOT KNOW until I did all that research.) But now they do know. I have told them in numerous speeches to the commission. I have given them documentation/maps, threatened suit--and filed suit in the Superior Court--which Judge Durham "un-filed" so now I have to make it a FEDERAL CASE, though I had hoped by now they would have voluntarily dropped their plans to commit the crime of destroying those GRAVES and the archeological site. They have acknowledged that they know what they are about to further destroy--as they have even named the walking bridge on Chief Ross's property "The Chief John Ross Memorial Bridge."; They have named the "Ross to Ridge Trail" between the Ross property and "Chieftains" (though the sign is nearer Major Ridge's "Chieftains"--still they know there had to be Chief Ross's place at this end of it.) And the city of Rome has changed its W. 3rd. Street Redevelopment sign to add a tiny green oval "pocket park" honoring the "John Ross farm site" actually where the western end of Chief John Ross's home was. YES THEY KNOW AND They ACKNOWLEDGE THEY KNOW. They are therefore deliberately about to commit those crimes Attachment: Untitled-5rev.jpg (Downloaded 140 times) Last edited on Sat Jun 21st, 2008 06:17 pm by serpentfoot |

Serpentfoot, I am in awe! Indian graves, historic significance, Federal Court protection of the property.... I do believe this could just be the ticket! How would a beautiful and historic park across the river benefit the citizens as a whole. A park named after Chief John Ross with statues and plaques detailing the Trail of Tears at it's horrible point of origin. A place of education and beauty. Ever been to Chattanooga and walked over the river on that beautiful old railroad bridge into their park. We could have the Chief John Ross bridge carry us to something like that or we coud have the David Do$$ bridge carry us to a strip mall with condos and retail outlets. Do I get to vote on this one?

If , in the Federal Court, we can stop David Do$$ and Others from redeveloping it for their profit, then you would probably get to vote on making it into a great park, in a future SPLOST election. And Yes I have seen that beautiful river in Chattanooga and "Ross's Landing" there. What I loved most about it was that you could actually see the rivers--NO UGLY LEVEES to hide them like here in Rome. Like you I'm looking forward to a great park here in our most historic spot around the river forks. Last edited on Mon Jun 23rd, 2008 06:31 pm by serpentfoot |

My Federal case to stop the City of Rome and David Doss et al from proceeding to commit the crime of destroying those graves and the Chief John Ross archeological site has been dismissed--just like the Floyd County Superior Court Judge Durham UNFILED the case I filed there to prevent the crime of destroying those graves and our most precious archeological site. I am up against some powerful forces but I am NOT GOING TO GIVE UP WHILE I YET LIVE! I would appreciate some help. PUBLICITY TO CREATE PUBLIC OUTRAGE IF WE CANNOT GET JUSTICE IN OUR COURTS! (And too often, as here, and as in the days of "legal slavery", we can't.) Last edited on Thu Jul 10th, 2008 07:18 pm by serpentfoot |

Profit wins everytime!!!!!! If their Mothers Graves where there, would they dig them up and dump them in the river for a Dollar Our local Government is obsessed with the d**n river banks, I vision once they have their master plan finished, it will look like a hamster cage, all the buildings connected together with those tubes like Floyd Medical Center has over Turner Mccall Blvd to the parking deck. Edited to add Do You know what will be the next things to go, the Historical buildings that is part of Rome's History, to them they will be an eye-sore against all the modern day building's. Serpentfoot, thanks for trying. I wonder if a Judge in Atlanta or elsewhere would have dismisssed this so offhandedly. As a side note; in Townsend, TN they were widening the highway that runs along Little River some years ago. They ran across some Indian graves and artifacts from a village that was located there. All work stopped for years as an archeological team gridded off the area and recovered all they could possibly find. Yes, the roadwork resumed eventually but it really got someone's attention. Another question I have is how does the Cherokee Tribe feel about this development? Where are they headquartered? Cherokee, NC? Maybe someone should drop them a line......
