I don't know the exact number of tornado sirens there are in Rome and Floyd County, but I can only recall hearing one several years ago, out near the rock quarry on Redmond Road.

In Cartersville/Bartow there are many of these early warning devices scattered throughout the community and you can actually be driving on highway 41 (in heavy traffic) and still hear them. The siren will activate followed by an announcement stating the emergency. AMAZING!!!!! HUH...commissioners.

Well, I guess there are just different priorities in Rome/Floyd than elsewhere when it comes to saving lives. Thanks for allowing me to get this off my chest.

I've lived 1.2 miles from the Cave Spring Fire Station for about 14 years now and have never heard the siren (yesterday included), although there have been several times it must have been used. I've been right at a tornado on two occasions and they scare me to death. One took off our chimney and several trees in our back yard, skipped over the next row of houses and hit the ones around a golf course and killed several people. The other one lifted the roof of the building my business was in then skipped over and tore up planes and hangers at Peachtree Dekalb airport. Needless to say, I don't want to get caught in another one. Anyone got a bus I can bury in the back yard?

Strange. I live 1.5 miles road miles probably closer as a crow flies and it was heard every time it sounded. Over on 100 almost to Fosters Mill store it was heard. You must live in a place where it is blocked by a mountain or something. I have also heard it out at my parents house close to Jackson Chapel Rd.

Can you give me a general idea as to where you live,(pm will if you wish) because this is info we need to see if we can correct the problem. Thanks for the info either way.

And I quote: "If we have tornado sirens going off, every idiot in Floyd County will flood 911 with calls", end quote, is what I was told. The person who told me that is dead, so I won't mention Hugh's I mean his name.

Right on top of the mountain, Padlock. I've often wondered why we have never heard the siren but never questioned whether it was being used or not. I guess I should have asked but never thought of it when I was in town. If you want to test it, let me know, you can come stand in my front yard and let them test it.

OK.....we're now at 55 views on this topic and only 2 sirens noted.

And as far as 911 being flooded with calls, if we had a system like Bartow there would be NO NEED for calls. The siren goes off and a man's voice very clearly states the emergency several times through the speaker. Sort of stops the need for "what's going on" calls. They are not just used for tornadoes but for all types of emergencies.

Have you ever noticed that the more something makes sense the farther government agencies stay away from them? BTW...don't let someone that works for Rome or Floyd government tell you that we don't have them is because you can simply watch T.V. or look at the weather on the computer.....if this happens...please identify those people to me.

Just a footnote: I don't know about the rural areas of Bartow although I did on occasion hear sirens, but in Cartersville the sirens were always interrupted by an announcement as to the nature of the emergency. You can even drive through there on I believe Wednesday before noon and hear this system being tested regularly.

Now come on guys.....we totally blasted Polk EMA for not being prepared....yet our neighbors over in Bartow are making our governments look bad. Any suggestions?

The only sirens I know of in Floyd County (Other than the one in Cave Spring) Are the ones at Berry College. The  Siren you heard at the "Rock Quarry" are actually owned and activated by Berry College during tornado warnings. This is just another safety precation we take to safeguard the life of our students and our Berry community. Maybe The Floyd/Rome county commissioners should learn a lesson from thecollege and purchase the devices.

They will say that sirens not only can't cover Floyd county, but also that it will cost 3 million dollars.

Wrong on both counts. A fellow from Whalen, I think, talked to the ARES guy here locally, and looked it all over, and said it could be done easily for a lot less,  but someone (same guy as earlier) locally didn't want to coordinate with ARES for some "it only happens in Rome" reason, so there's no way he would listen to Derek, I mean the ARES guy.

I know that when we use to go to baseball games at the levee I can remember a siren going off that sounded like it was somewhere around the country club.

I know where you live and understand why you cannot here it. I actually went by a short time ago and payed particular attention to the area. The gap up padlock and other curves let the sound be absorbed into the mountain. We are looking into upgrading once the new station is built.

That will be wonderful. I honestly thought they had never set the alarm off because I had never heard it. I really appreciate everything you guys do to try to keep us safe. I'm looking forward to you having a new firestation, I certainly think you deserve it. Thanks again.

I know, lets put up more cameras so we can video them, and build another bridge.  Spice "We The People"

I don't have time to watch many video's and I really don't need a bridge, I can swim. But if I ever need a fireman, I sure hope one is nearby.
