With all of the candidates running for the small number of available commission seats, who can win?

I don't live in the actual "city limits" so I cannot vote in this particular election.  However, in my humble opinion, unfortunately I think it's merely a popularity contest.

Unfortunately, even less people go to the polls in a city election than in other elections.  The winners will be those candidates who get the most supporters to go vote and "single shot" for their particular candidate.

What bothers me equally as much is the fact that the City Commission recently denied a zoning request from Larry Martin on a piece of land in East Rome.  Mr. Martin has stated that when the requesite 1 year has elapsed, he intends to bring it up for re-zoning again.  Now, we see where Martin Real Estate has donated $ 2,000.00 to the campaign of Duane Reid!  Does that tell anyone else anything, or is it just my suspicious nature?

I often vote for "anyone other than the person who is incumbent".....that could be the reasoning behind the campaign contribution.

Ok, billybob ... you have tweaked my interest again. :)

I had not seen the contribution from Martin until you pointed it out.  I had seen the $1000 from the Pierce family.  I personally never had any issues with Duane Reid.   But it does make one raise the eyebrows, eh ?

I also have noticed that he is the only candidate (unless I over looked it) to list a PO Box for his residence.  I know you have live in the area you are running in, so perhaps there is another document for proof of residence ? For the record, I don't care where he lives, I just thought it odd.

He lives in the Ward he is running in..............but, there is a For Sale sign in his front yard.  If he should be elected, he'll most likely resign again in the near future leaving yet another vacancy for yet another "appointment".

I don't think so.  In over 40 years of observing the city commission, I can't recall anyone ever receiving a contribution of $ 2,000 for a city commission race unless of course, it was from the candidate himself/herself or from a relative; and, I don't think Martin and Reid are related.

I went to the VA clinic dedication today... It is funny how many politicians that are running for office show up for these things... If it were not an election year, 2/3 of them would not be there.

I just hope that whoever gets on the commission, they do away with that stupid title of mayor. We are the laughingstock around because we have some guy who calls himself mayor. I also will not vote for the incumbents or anyone that the so called mayor donates money to.

Yeah I think the whole MAYOR thing is crazy too.  A mayor handles it all.  They should have watched more Andy Griffith before they made the title of MAYOR!

Hey Romenewswire, story idea!  How about a section with interviews on where each candidate stands on the "issues" that matter.  Maybe setup a topic where people state the topic they want to know about and ask the candidates for their stance.  I know RNT has done this in the past.  I am never available to go and listen to the candidates and it would be nice to see who I am voting for.

How about this... We hold a RomeWired debate... I talk to the candidates and sign them up under a screen name.. Then all of the readers can ask questions about various topics... Of course, it would have to be heavily moderated so no one would ask loaded questions or start personal attacks...
