OK, so I saw a snake today slithering around toward the back of my husband's garage. I thought for a minute I was going to pass out. Does anyone know if the old tale about moth balls keeping snakes away is true? My husband swears it is, and has now spread about 4 boxes of them around his garage.

Does anyone know if the old tale about moth balls keeping snakes away is true? My husband swears it is, and has now spread about 4 boxes of them around his garage. I had heard this too. We used to live on the Coosa River and I would go buy 20 boxes of moth balls from the Dollar store. I would take a hammer and bust up 10 boxes and spread it around the house and then take the other 10 boxes and just throw the moth balls all over the yard. I have to say that I never saw a snake in our yard. My hubby saw some on the ank but none ever got in the house or close that I ever saw.

That explains something to me! When we moved into our house the whole front yard smelled like moth balls. We found a few half-disintegrated ones. The previous owners must have tried that. I guess it doesn't last forever because we've seen some beautiful king snakes.

When I was a kid, Granny always put lime around the outside of the outhouse to keep the snakes away. Nothing worse than sitting your naked butt down on a snake. We haven't seen any around here which is strange since we have a farm, but I leave them alone and hope they will leave me alone.

Well all we have around our garage is 2 lawnmowers, and a propane tank. We have a lot of frogs b/c we have a pool, and hubby thinks they are around to eat the frogs. I am horrified at the sight of a snake, king snake or rattle snake, they are all the same to me. Hopefully the moth balls will work, but now the smell around his garage is awful (lol).

Mothballs do work and you have to put fresh ones out each year.

I found this info online: http://www.aphis.usda.gov/lpa/pubs/tn_wmsnakerepellent.html I also found this at Wikipedia: Older mothballs consisted primarily of naphthalene, but due to naphthalene's flammability, modern mothballs use dichlorobenzen instead. Both of these ingredients have a strong, pungent odor often associated strongly with mothballs. Camphor, an insect repellent, can be used in mothballs also. The idea with both chemicals is to kill moths and moth larvae with the fumes. Both naphthalene and pera-dichlorobenzene sublimate, meaning they transition from a solid straight to a gas. The gas is toxic to the moths. For either of these chemicals to be effective, they need to be placed with the clothing in a sealed container so the fumes can build up and kill the moths. In a sealed atmosphere like this, the fumes are not harmful to people because they are contained. The main threat would occur when opening the containers, or from wearing clothes immediately after opening (especially a problem for infants). A solution is to open the containers outside and let the clothes hang and air out for a day before wearing. Adolescents have recently been found to use mothballs for huffing. Mothballs have also been found to be a carcinogen (i.e. a cancer-causing agent). Other uses illegal Mothballs have also been used for a number of other purposes, such as as a snake repellent, or to keep away silverfish, mice or other pests. Such usages are dangerous to humans, animals and the environment and are illegal.
