Last night my husband and I went out for a rare date night. We decided to go to Schorder's on Broad St. and then to a movie. When we got to Broad St. the whole left side of the street was blocked off for the dang cyclist, the fight was going on at the Forum and there was a wedding at the Margaretta Hall and NO WHERE FOR US TO PARK! We rode around the block I know 5 times tring to figure out where we were going to park. First of all, who cares about seeing a bunch of people riding bikes? There may have been a handfull of people watching them. The parking lot at the Forum is blocked off due to construction, so all those people had to find somewhere to park. We finally just parked on the side of the road and walked 3 blocks to Schroder's. We couldn't even enjoy our meal for worring if we were going to have a ticket when we got back to our car...cause you know they like to do that! Then we go all the way out to Coosa to see WANTED. We had 2 movie passes that my sister in law gave us as gifts. We thought this would be a great idea since gas is so high, we could use our passes to see the movie and it wouldn't cost us a thing! Well, we get to the window and the fat lady with no personality tells us that we can't use our passes on the first week the movie comes out!!!! WTH! Why don't they stamp that on the back of the passes??? Sometimes I think this town is so screwed up! So, needless to say, our date night was ruined! The people who plan these events in Rome need to think about EVERY event that is going on, and they need to think about the other people in Rome who are just trying to have a nice evening. I didn't see the need to have the WHOLE left side of the street blocked off when those stupid cyclist were just going around in a circle!!!

I can understand your frustration but probably those events were pre-planned, and Saturday nights are usually the night everyone picks to go out. I don't ride motorcycles but I know several folks who do and they are not stupid, they enjoy riding and have as much right to hold a planned event as anyone else. I agree that your movie passes should have stated when they could be used, I would call ahead next time to be sure. I hope that when you plan your next night out, it will turn out much better for you and you will have a great time.

It wasnt Motorcycles it was regular street bikes, and that event while I dont like it myself does bring alot of revenue to floyd county businesses. The motels/hotels get alot of business as do restaurants and stores. Free movie passes have always (since I can remember) had restrictions on them, but I do agree it should have been written on it. Downtown Rome is horrid with parking, and I am very sorry your date night was so bad as I myself rarely get out with my wife, but I do believe in making the best of everything no matter what, not just spending the whole evening getting madder and madder and ruining the night with worry. As for parking there is the parking deck by the library, and normally alot of parking on the side streets. Yes you may have to walk some, but I personally like to walk on dates out as the nights are warm now and enjoyable.

Craftymama, have you called the manager of the Theatre? It really seems unreasonable that they would not allow you admittance if the rules were not printed on the passes. Perhaps they would be willing to give you extra passes to make up for the problem.

Somebody paid for the tickets. I've never had issue with using them on the first week or even the first night. You are talking about the orange ones, right?

When the parking is that bad I usually go to the bank and park and just walk. I just hate the walk back.

We had a similiar experience a few weekends back--a date night that turned out so bad it got funny. We get date nights very few and far between--we had to go out late due to kid issues, and planned to go to Bistro 239 for drinks and then Harvest Moon for dinner (spread the dollars around). We enjoyed our drinks at the Bistro (she makes good mojitos) and then made our way over to H.M. By the time we got there, they weren't serving dinner anymore! It was like 9:30! On a Thursday! We turned around to head back to the first place, but they were closing up shop, too. We walked up to a few more places on Broad St....No luck. We called Sassafras Grille over on Redmond--nope, they had closed the kitchen, too. No food for us. At 9:30 on a Thursday night! So we went to Krystal's, bought a sack of burgers and sat on a bench on Broad St. to watch all the ridiculous drunks and their shenanigans coming out of the Alley. Good times, good times. I agree with others--walking around downtown is all part of the fun of a night out on Broad St.

I've got to agree with you about the downtown parking to an extent. While the forum's lot is being worked on, there's plenty of parking behind schroeder's in the parking deck there (is it free in the evenings?) But the planning of the events is what really stunk. Consider the bicycle & fight event beginning/ending within the span of 2 hours. One side is completely blocked, making it impossible for anyone coming for the fight event finding parking spaces thereby creating a nightmare for everyone who wants to head downtown for the cuisine or to shop. Despite another local eatery complaining about the parking situation through the week, for the most part you can find parking during the day downtown and through most of the week's evenings.

I had to come to downtown 2 days last week and park on Broad Street. Both times were horrible spent 20 mins looking for parking and then it was a mile away. Both times I remembered why I never choose to come to the downtown area between 10 and 3. To make it worse you better not plan on enjoying a leisurely meal and then taking in a few shops, you'll get a ticket for being there to long. I love the history of broad street and the beauty of the buildings but the parking and the prices of food and shops make it almost unbearable.

Did you ever got down toward the lower 300 & 200 block during those times? I'd say nearly 85% of the time there's plenty of spaces to park. As it gets closer to noon, the spaces get taken up, but once it's past 1, they start to empty back out. If you're in the food business that period of time is the busiest for them. The rest of us have to wait for the spaces to open back up for customers the rest of the time. Thankfully, some places let you use their parking area. Other's don't. They've no clue to how it hurts their own business, but they don't stay in business long either.

Well, you could always park at the West 3rd street tennis courts and enjoy the stroll across the new footbridge.

Sounds as though it wasn't such a bad evening after all, I'll bet the two of you had a lot of laughs. Sometimes just being away from the everyday grind, with the person you care most about is all you really need.
