well being about as caucasian as they come and speaking clear english, i think i'll just say "no speaka engrish" and keep going next time. my dad told me to do what he does and ask for the store manager on duty and have the store manager push the buggy out to the car and load everything up. he said it's worked and when they've refused, he said that he'd threaten to take all of his items to customer service and return them, take his business elsewhere, and then on the next business day, call the home office in Bentonville, Arkansas and report the manager and store. don't know if he's actually done that though. he's a fiesty old fella when it comes to dealing with the greeters

Would love to start one-person anti-Wal-Mart campaign that lists all the local businesses to patronize that have the same items.. Wal-Mart is the cheapest, but...when you wait to buy stuff until you are running errands in the vicinity of the alternate local places..you wouldn't believe how much you save in the end because half the stuff you buy at Wal-Mart wasn't on your shopping list anyway. You actually save your money...no more impulse buying...or feeding the Wal-Mart monster! Last edited on Fri Jun 27th, 2008 04:08 pm by GoWithTheFlow |

Well, I can tell you that many items that I have bought at WM that are like HBA can also be found at Dollar General for the same price, sometimes a little cheaper, sometimes a few cents more. WM prices are lower than most on high volume items but they are not on items that don't get bought as often. Just their meat is a prime example. Their meats are priced ridiculously and it's because people stopped buying them when they started putting all those chemicals in. I can buy clothes cheaper at the mall than at WM usually also and they last longer. I don't let WM have any more of my money than I have too. I dislike WM for more than just pricing though. They cut hours of their employees to keep from giving benefits, many times having people work one hour under the amount they would need to qualify. They claim to be founded on Christian values and I know someone personally who got fired for giving Easter cards out to their friends at work. They close all those registers down at 10pm to save hours knowing that at that time, everything else except Kmart is closed. They are shifty in their business practices. The Black Friday ads have ALWAYS gotten posted the week before Thanksgiving and WM threatened to sue this past year if anyone posted them on the internet. They shut down local businesses and that just drives me crazy. I think I won't go any further, I'm irritated now.

SR, you just stated most of the reasons why we refer to Wal-Mart as....well...it's a dirty word at my house. I have had several parents of my students work there and they had a difficult time getting off work to come for conferences once or twice a year and that is not acceptable. Even before my one-person boycott started, we only went there every couple months to shop for a few items in bulk, like dog food, detergents, toilet paper and such. When I went to China last summer and witnessed the other side of the Wal-Mart machine, it just drove me over the edge. When Sam Walton was alive and Wal-Mart could carry the "Made in America" label, it seemed almost patriotic to shop there. When he died and Wal-Mart went megacorporate they became a capitalist snake in the grass, insidious.... I know I am only one person, but... I am willing to pay a little more, buy a whole lot less, and not feel I am in bed with the Wal-Mart pimp.

Anyone remember when WalMart was started, selling as many American made items as Sam Walton could get his hands on? Boy have they changed. I could challenge you to find anything made in America in that store now. I've had people tell the that the illegal aliens in this country are saving us money by working here for so little pay. So, why does everything you buy say "made in :Korea, Mexico, India, etc.? Even the majority of our produce in the grocery store comes from other countries now. I recently read an article about the Canadian Government paying pork farmers to dispose of their pigs and not raise anymore for three years, because they have an over abundance and America is the major purchaser of their pork. Well, not trying to hijack the thread, back to WalMart. I am not a fan of WalMart and shop there only when I cannot find what I want elsewhere. Dollar General has much better buys on personal items. We recently returned a lawn mower battery to WalMart, that was less than 3 months old. We just wanted to exchange it since I couldn't locate the receipt. The manager came up and told us that the battery was over a year old and they would not exchange it. He said the sticker (little round red one) indicated that it was out of warranty. My son went back an got a new one off the shelf that had last years date and tried to explain that there were batteries back there that were already out of date. The man was very rude and called my son a lier, even though he had the proof in front of him. I practically dragged my son from the store to keep him from getting arrested and he is not a violent person. We went elsewhere and bought a battery. I would also like to mention that I recently cut up my Home Depot Card! I had a credit limit on it of $500, it was a new account. I charged $496 on it and when the bill came, I paid it in full. We were in the process of redoing our floors in hardwood and had spent several thousand dollars there and they offered me a 10% discount if I would open an account. Four days after paying the bill (on Line), I went in to make a purchase that was just over $500, they told me my account still showed a balance of $496 and when I showed them the printout of where it had been paid off they said that they put a 10 day hold on any account that gets paid in full because they are not accustomed to people paying the entire bill. I asked them if they could up the limit $100 and they said no! I asked for a pair of scissors and promptly cut the card up in front of them and asked them to throw it in the trash. I paid cash (as I normally do) for my purchase. There is one employee who was there who thinks it was the funniest thing she had ever seen and every time we go in there, she asked me if I ever got another card. I do a lot more shopping at Lowe's now. They even took a huge ceiling fan and light down off display for me because the newer ones had the little tiny lights and I wanted to use regular bulbs in this one. The products were of the lowest quality, especially clothes, I have ever seen in my life, anywhere. Threadbare and ravelled... The food was ok, but there were lots of live animals (turtles, eels, starfish, etc. that were in tanks) We didn't buy anything from there, but we did get several bags of lovely jasmine tea from an independent kiosk just inside the entrance.

Sam Walton is rolling and doing flips in his grave trying to get out to slap his family back to what Wal-Mart is suppose to be about. I think he would be more mad at the way that the employees are treated.

There is a greeter at Wal Mart that will not greet white people. I have walked pasted her and smiled and her not say a thing. But if an African American comes thru the door she will speak to them. This was not just one time, but several.

I think he would be more mad at the way that the employees are treated. I think you are right. My Aunt is has been a Walmart manager since before Sam Walton died. When he was alive, they took care of their employees, so that in turn they would take care of the customers. Now, they say the goal is to take care of the customers, but the employee moral is low .... and that is what rolls downhill. You have to take care of the people that take care of your customers.

Sorry folks, but just about everywhere you shop, you will find tragedy today in the USA. The dollar store industry is so abusive to employees that their turn-over rate is off the chart. In fact, if you read industry reports, fast food and dollar store industry stores compete with how fast the turn-over rate can be. WM and KM are barely a step up. The labor force is not valued anymore. It's lip service. On the other hand, the labor force has a lot to be desired. People can't focus; can't perform their jobs with any good performance level; and don't show up to work with regularity anymore either. We could all offer a bunch of reasons for both sides of this discussion. But both sides have gone downhill. To me, it's a perfect reflexion of what we do and do not prioritize in society anymore. Therefore, families suffer and the consequences are riveting all the way down to our core. I shop at WM all the time. From Shannon, I go to WR, ER and Calhoun. It depends on the other things going on. If I only need WM and gasoline, I usually head to Calhoun since the gas is usually cheaper. But DG is here so I use them for a few things that are cheaper there. If anything consumes gas, I put that into the 'bottom-line cost' when I figure out what is cheaper where. I don't shop around using gas. I do use the internet a lot if the shipping is free and I can wait to get the item. I only buy from places with return guarantees and no hidden costs. I usually wait for sales if I can but I have to since I have no money with two grandgirls here. As for human rights, I believe. Oh, yes, I believe. Fought for them. Protested for them. Marched for them back when I was younger. But I know there are billions of people in China too. A small percent of them should get up and throw out that government. Seems like that happened in the USA years ago. I would pay more for products but that's the way it goes. Here's a question I want to know the answer to: If the Arabs can sell us oil at, say, what ends up to be $5.00 a gallon, why can't we sell them the wheat they buy and eat at the equivalent of that same $5? I don't care if it's not too fair. They need and want that wheat just like we want and need that oil. OK. I'll shut up now that I went wayyyyyyyyyyy overboard off topic. Someone shoot me now. AH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
