There are different opinions about the recent surcharges on tickets. I think they're a good idea but that's not actually what I was interested in - although, by all means, voice an opinion. I'm more curious about how they're being used by the different governments.

Last night on 11Alive, we were told that Atlanta wants to apply the surcharges to the general fund. My gut reaction was, NO! Give it to the police and buffer their charges! Keep the police out there; keep 'em paid; and keep 'em going! Mostly, keep other government entities out of the money! ha ha ha ha ha! I know they're cutting jobs, but support that force! So, I wanted to throw the idea of the money as it might be used or collected around here in our city and county.

I thought, would that encourage policefolks to actually write more tickets or stop folks more often? Well, I only want people stopped if they need to be stopped. But then, give that money back to the police. Our police suffer enough, dear God, they do! So, could a different agency make sure the money would be spent on the forces? No, in my mind, that wastes the money because it'd create a way to spend part of the money on more salaries for more oversight. Or, could it simply be incorporated into their budgets? Or used in the same way as applied subsidies - that way it could  easily fluctuate as the monetary amount changed? Certainly don't give it to a County Commissioner to decide!!

So, in the end, I have decided that I like the idea of surcharges but not just on traffic tickets alone. On a lot of things. Maybe not on ambulances that pick up poor people or dying people. You get the idea. There are kinks that need to be worked out.

And don't apply a surcharge on me for anything. Because I said so.

I had the thought that surcharges would be great too when I first heard.  My first thought was when people call the cops over every little thing.  The problem is, who would decide this?  Knowing our city, an agency would be started to oversee the surcharge that would then only cover the agencies existance.  There has to be a black and white.  I say let them go back their ticket at the city at regular price then go over to the police department and pay the charge.  Then, and only then, would the ticket be closed out.  I know several cops that write the majority of their tickets at the end of the month to meet quota.  Maybe they would start writing more them but it would need to go into their pockets directly which they deserve.  What about EMTs and fire trucks though?  Takes a lot of money to move one of those fire trucks.  That goes back to where do you put the surcharges?  I think tickets are a great idea anything else would have to be well though out and that would require too much time and money.

In one of the counties, and I don't want to mis-inform anyone so I can't remember which one to clarify, the judge sets the surcharge and/or if one is applied.

I think the fire trucks, etc. should get some sort of subsidy as well. But couldn't that come out of the same fund that is just from the traffic charges? For public ambulance service too?

They'll be making $$ soon, anyway. The redlight cameras are being installed at the bypass. I just came by there.

But it's not exactly about any money. I'm interested in a surcharge and that money.

As for the cameras, no, I don't like them. I have so much self-doubt going on over there at Hicks Drive! I turn into a different person! I don't like driving through that light for anything! And I don't have a history of tickets! But I get self-conscious there.

I'm all for it as long as they stop taxing me. Let the one's getting the tickets pay for law enforcement. No property taxes, tag taxes, sales taxes, income taxes, fuel taxes, whew.....and any other frick taxes they are sending me a bill for. Oh ya, beer and liquor taxes!

While we are at it, lets make marijuana legal but put a big ol tax on that to cover all the stuff we dont want to pay.

EXTRA money, in whatever form or for whatever reason goes to the general fund.  It is of course, politically popular to tag on a fuel surcharge fee.  It will be spent on new bridges across the river

Dosen't our social security money go into a special fund? So that it can be invested to make me more money. Our protectors will never see any of it. They want to tax my breathing.

I know where they hang out. Berry, the exchange going to 411, and 27 south just past CVT.

If they would come down and hang out on my corner to run radar for a couple of days, I would provide all the coffee and munchies they could manage. It's getting like the Indy 500 here lately. People think those speed limit signs on the side of the road are a suggestion rather than the limit.
