msla wrote: OK. We're not shovel people but we can use brooms. How about bringing drinks or something for the work crews?
Meanwhile, next week, we'll take him some easy food. Does he cook with anything, like a campstove, or simply eat sandwiches? I don't want to take him junk food.

Thanks msla, Drinks for work crews would be great. Lets get a count of those who will participate first though. I don't think he cooks, he mentioned that he rides his bicycle up to some place that gives free food, I would think he is talking about a church mission. If you look at the pictures tereca posted, the large sheet has a telephone number on it, that is Rusty's cell phone number, you could call him and ask him if he would like you to bring something by.

there was alot of debris on the floor...mainly soot and ash and the ceiling tiles...he has alot of stuff piled up and he has started cleaning up some things in the house.  i think once we get in there and get the walls torn down to the studs and everything cleaned up, it wouldnt take very long to get the inside finished.  the ceiling joist look good to me, there may be a few that need to be replaced, tj will take care of that. i know he has alot of things piled up in the yard that needs to be thrown away, things covered with tarps.  rusty seemed to be in pretty good spirits when me and spice were there, he is very greatful for everything we are going to help him with.

To all Ive known Rusty since I was 16 years old. I spent many a days in that house. Iv tried to help him for 10 years now. Food , money showers ,fix his lawnmower appliances, cars. There is no end to him wanting help. He is mentally ill. Im not a Dr. but i worked at NWR hospital for 10 years. Thats where he needs to be until he is stable. He took acid for over ten years, then he went to crack and then meth. Meth done him in. im seen him stay up for 10 days straight. He has killed animals, stole animals. The dog he has now he stole out of someones backyard. He did this because he dog died in his car. He took the dead dog and stored in refridgerator until he could get the money to have it stuffed. when his house burned i was the first to help him. I called the red cross for him, which he first refused. then he called cused me out for not helping more. also he did not have brain injury in 1993, who ever came up with that is a lie. he used to be against religon. since the fire he has found God. that sounds good but he told me God only asks him to be nice but not clean from drugs. So please help the guy im to tired of it ,BUT BE carefull.  dew

while your input is very important, the majority of us do not know rusty, but we are all willing to help a fellow Roman out.  maybe this is his wake up call. i do know that he has started therapy and seems to want to get his life back together, as far as the drugs, im sure 99% of the people on this forum has tried drugs, that alone does not stop anyone from getting help. i dont know about some people, but, i feel it is my duty and obligation to help someone in need. who knows, one day i may need help and i sure would be greatful for the people on RNW forums to help me.  i try not to judge people by their past, just their future.  we all have skeletons in our closet and would like to forget them.

****edited to add***

i went to the dollar tree this morning and they have all kinds of work gloves  and bottled water there.  i will be buying some gloves the week of the 4th.  if anyone can donate or buy some gloves and water, that would be great.  you can PM me or spice

dew, welcome to the board. We welcome any input. We have had others who reiterated basically what you have just stated. Obviously, Rusty has some major mental issues and we are working on handling that end of the situation as well as getting his home taken care of. One thing for sure, anything we do as far as fixing the house, certainly can't hurt the neighborhood as far as property values go. We hope to be able to help this man get his life back on track but like you, if he does not follow through with the things he needs to do, then we will have to back off and say enough. Thank you again for your input and please, if you have any questions or suggestions, feel free to let us know.

Tecera, We have to make a trip to Alabama today and I will stop and pick up some gloves and other stuff. I love what the word "Stuff" includes, don't you? My middle son say's he will help with the shovling out when he's not working. He has his job and the farm work here. He just ran the power and water lines to the barn and now has to put in the outlets and lights and then fence the area for the animals so his time will be limited.

Everyone, have a great weekend and stay safe.

Absolutely. If you click on my name "Spice", you will see PM (Private Message), click on that and you can send me a message that is like e-mail. It does not get posted on the board and I do not share my PM's with anyone else. Any info you give me will remain confidential.

Edited to mention that we appreciate your offer of help.

Since I was out and about today, I purchased a few cleaning items:

1 Shovel, about 20 pair of heavy Latex gloves, some rubber gloves, cloth gloves, 1 gal mean green, 2 gal bleach, 4 cans comet, 8 rolls paper towels, 6 scrub brushes, scouring pads, bucket, two metal dustpans, scouring sponges, 2 cans wasp and hornet spray(just in case), two boxes large heavy trash bags.

I also picked up some heavy masks, O'Rilley's auto parts, gave me a good discount on 16 of them.

I took care of it and I'm sure there will be more supplies needed and that I didn't think of everything. Some of the things that we will need may not seem necessary until we actually get involved in the task. We had to pick up a steering wheel puller at the auto parts place and I asked the manager about the masks. He showed them to me and he only had 16 of them. I told him what we were doing and ask if he could donate or discount them so he gave me a really good discount.

I ask about discounts at Family Dollar on the other stuff but they are not allowed to give discounts, we won't tell anyone that they gave me the earlier price on some items that were scheduled to increase in price. They also suggested that we might post signs around to let people know what we are doing and how to reach us to volunteer.

Just wanted to give everyone an update on the Rusty Project. I spoke with Danny Mulkey this am at the AAA Environmental Waste. He asked if we couldn't put the debris on the street and have the city pick it up. He still seemed open to donating the use of a rolloff dumpster so I gave him TJ's number and asked him to call and talk to TJ because he will be doing the contracting work. We are still looking at the weekend after 4th of July for the clean up crew to assemble. If I hear anything further, I will post it right away. Everyone have a great day.

Edited to mention that we are still accepting volunteer labor (clean up crew) and suggestions or information anyone might like to offer.
