any one interested in giving blood due to summer shortages, we will be having a blood drive on Tuesday, June 17 at 1000 until 1400 at the Floyd County Jail Administration. Please give if possible, summertime means more accidents, more accidents means more need for blood. Thank You for your interest, Fred Lucas.

I have the universal blood type as does my father... what is is 0 neg or 0 pos?? anyway.... So, I go to walmart when they're set up out there and the people told me it'd be over a 2 hour wait. I mean, PLEASE! wow! Ok, apparently they don't need my blood if they are that busy. Well, the following month I go back. Keep in mind I'm a single parent who does all she can...blah blah blah (you know the story that single moms throw out there). anyway... so, my 8 yr old was with me. She very polite and quiet. She's very well-mannered. They told me that she'd have to sit outside by herself that she couldn't come into the "blood vessel" while I was giving blood. How hard is it for someone who is is the side of an 8 year old to sit there quietly and not move while mom gives blood? I mean...and what friggin moron would think i'd leave her outside the blood vessel alone at walmart? I was a little ill. Does anyone know why they wouldn't let her in. I'm sure there is a good reason for it. I'm sure there is some type of health-whatever they come up with. But my gosh. If you have the blood they call begging for, you'd think they'd try to accomodate. I had no sitter. There was no way around it. I went twice to give blood, it was in inconv. for them both times. I doubt I'll go back. I'm not a person who likes to be stuck to start with. I was nervous as all get out on my way over....but knew it was for a good cause. But considering I have my child almost 24/7....  oh well...

The T shirts are the Harley Davidson shirts. You also get to register to win a Harley. The blood Drive will not be in the blood vessel, but in the admin offices. Use the front door to the left of the flagpole.  I wish the shirts had my pic on them, but as bad as blood is needed, that might scare people off!

To reply to partygurl.....Im very excited to know that you have the universal blood type and that you were very willing to come out and give blood. But, Im having a hard time choking down that someone on the BLOOD VESSEL would turn you or your child out from giving blood when the need it so CRITICAL right now.  I have been on the "BLOOD VESSEL" for 5 yrs and I have NEVER seen anyone be turned down from giving blood or not letting a child come aboard. We WELCOME one and all to come out to give blood, because we do supply our local hospitals. If you have an infant, Im sure we might have asked that someone be with you to watch over the child because it is FDA rules that no one can be in the Donor room at the time of phlebotomy because of the safety of that person. We always let the children sit in front of the bus, offer them a snack and drink, while the parent is donating. If it was a 2 hr wait for you, Im sorry, but with a public drive like that it can sometimes be hecktic, but NEVER a 2 hr wait....I hope that you will respond with your name so that we could discuss or resolve this issue..But if you don't want to donate on the Vessel, your more than welcome to go to our Center in the Midtown Crossing.

I used to donate blood all the time - the last pint I gave put me close to 5 gallons.  Imagine my surprise when the next time I went to donate and was told that I was permanently banned because I lived in England for 2 years (my family was in the military).  It is a shame that I really want to give blood but can't.  The Red Cross and Blood Assurance constantly are in desperate need of blood, but have excluded people who lived overseas (in certain countries).

I have the same problem. Used to donate blood all the time and about 6 months ago they told me I couldn't do it anymore because I had been in Africa a few times back in the early 70's. Just wonder how all those people that previously got my blood are making out?

Don't feel bad guys.  They are just exercising an abundance of caution, so that the blood supply is safe.  Remember all the turmoil when HIV first came on the scene and people were being transfused with tainted blood?  I'm sure they're just trying to avoid a repeat of that scenario.

There usually isn't any wait if you go to the Blood Assurance office next to Goody's. I went today with my 10 year old. They let him sit at a table, eat a snack, and watch TV while I gave.:)

Where do you find the rules about who can't give blood because of the country you were in? I was thinking of donating, but I was born overseas to American parents in the military.

I can't donate anymore because a couple of years ago when they tested my blood it was questioably positive for hepatitis C. I was shocked about that. Even though I've had this issue cleared up they won't let me donate ever again.  (needless to say I didn't have the disease).  I am the coordinator for our blood drives and yet I'm not able to donate. I've donated since I was 17 years old. My father still donates and he's 75 now.  Check with blood assurance also about requirements for donating. Some of their rules are a little bit different than Red Cross and Blood Assurance is our local provider.
