Forced to drive drunk? Keep your tail at home if you want to drink or plan for a designated driver that has a license(never could spell that word but I do have one), tag and insurance.

Deaglo's, I have the grandkids that week but I will do my level best to have someone keep them so I can attend. If I'm correct, that would be Tuesday, July 8, 2008 @ 2:00pm.

How is your mother doing?

Are you not aware we have NO PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION to speak of??? Even in Rome the buses stop at ~6 PM, NONE ON WEEKENDS or Holidays? And none at all in the county. And the average person cannot pay exorbitant cab fare--~$30. for a short round trip?? Even high priced gas is cheaper than cabs!!!

What? Did you think we still had regular greyhounds? Trailways? Train stations all over the county like we once had????

They force no one to drive.  If a person gets drunk and loses his license that was what he chose to do.   Driving is a privelege not a right.

Public transportation was the primary way that folks moved around back in the day but has been replaced by private automobile for all transport other than for huge distances.  Even with all the folks in public housing because they can not afford to pay rent or purchase a home existing local bus usage is minimal because they choose to own a car instead.

Serpentfoot, you have intelligence....I've seen it......but you really need to join us in the new millenium.

-CW

I agree with both statements.....it is a case of don't throw the baby out with the bath water.  Some of what Serpentfoot said is a little off, IMO, but not everything

A question.....what if someone "our age", baby boomer & up, were to need transportation for whatever?  Why is there only limited bus service?  Yes, I do remember back in the day, but say someone lives out of "the loop" or is elderly, but can still get around....or cannot afford an automobile or the gas it takes to run one.  Someone who doesn't have family or any other means of transportation.  What are they supposed to do????

It's something else to ponder....like there's not enough already.  It just seems to be a case of people falling thru the cracks, again.   Why would you, CW,  say people choose to own a car instead.  Does everyone you know own a car?  PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY....pfft!  That is strange that I did not know there were no buses on the weekends or holidays.  Guess it's just another sign of the times, but doesn't seem quite fair....think I have a "bleeding heart"?

At which meeting can we speak? And, is Fricks going to be there? I want to find out if he is going to be present. That's the meeting I want to go to. My neighbor said she'd babysit if it's the one at night because she works in the day! Yea!

So, these are my thoughts: I'm going to call the clerk or whoever and find out how to get on the agenda thing and get my name on there. Then I want to find out if Fricks will be there or when will he be back from his well-timed vacation. And I want to find out the time of the meeting so I book a babysitter! Then I want to put my statement on paper so I get it right. And, then I'll hand my statement out after I'm done so the RNT and each Commissioner will have a copy with my name, address and the exact words. If I can't hand the statement out, I'll cordially let it be available when the meeting is over - that's fine with me. But nobody needs to "get it wrong" out of convenience for them! I'm sick of crooked politics and the reporters loving them!

CW correct me if I am wrong. The way I understood CW's post was that long ago when cars became affordable people chose to buy and use them rather than public transportation. So why keep something that is not being used. Same way as the trains have disappeared. Why wouldnt you know about the busses on the weekend?Must own a car.

Fudge, you have very succinctly rephrased my post.

Faintsy, I could have sworn that I placed a 'many' phrase in there somewhere when refering to folks who live in public housing...could be my mind going or it could be that I planned it but never got around to editing it in.  It was supposed to be there because certainly one can not argue that all folks in any given situation are doing something, but in this case I would say that a majority of them are.

Its a funny thing.  I conclude that folks choose to own a car vs renting/purchasing a house because it is easier to manage from a financial stand point.  Smaller payments over a shorter period of time on something that the government will not assist you with (a car) vs higher payments over a much longer period of time and if you chose not to rent/purchase one can often get the government to subsidize(sp?) a good portion of the cost.

As for the question of the baby boomers, there are several orgaizations that assist with this very thing.  Mercy Sr Car either runs a van or lets Tallapoona ??? run out of their location.  I don't know for fact but I would wager that several churches may run a van ministry to asist if not individual church members.

Lastly there is limited bus service because the demand just is not there to support it.  Yes there are those who would use it.  At what cost though?  Our local governments budgets are already streached.  (Please lets not debate this here too, we are already way off topic.)  As much as I hate to say it the tangible and in-tangible ROI on a county wide bus service like the days of old* is simply not there.

Enjoyed your opinions.

-CW

* I don't know what the bus system of old consisted of.  I know that at some point GE (or some other large company that was running a bus service) donated busses to the city to creat the RTD but I have no clue as to what sort of coverage the previous service offered, price, schedule, etc.

James Q. Wilson, former Harvard professor and general squint, stated back in the early 80's that driving is a right.  He said that because back in the day, when no one had cars, you could walk or take your horse and carriage anywhere you needed to be.  Nowadays, with everything being so far away and separated, that can't be done.

Again, something to ponder.  While the law currently says that driving is a privilege, is it really?

It's not just the drunks and drugged up, but also the unlicensed (for whatever reason), and those who can't afford insurance and tags, but also the half blind or those developing alheimers or who are otherwise not able to drive well who ARE FORCED TO DRIVE ANYWAY when they need to go somewhere BECAUSE THEY HAVE NO ALTERNATIVE, NO 24/7 PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION. :X

But anybody who thinks its better to have cars only MAY :?:? decide differently when gas prices FORCE US ALL TO STAY HOME. (But even then some folks won't figure it out :? ) The stupidity in control of government is about to give us another DEPRESSION--such as the one I was born into in 1933.:(

When it's full blown there will be some selling their cars for $5. IF THEY CAN FIND A BUYER! They'll be wishing they could steal a ride on a train like the hobos in the 1930s could.:) In the 1930s country folks from Holland and Sprite or Tulip (or other country places) could ride to Rome on a train to sell their eggs, and other farm products, buy what they needed, and ride back home on another train--all for a few cents:)

This may shock some of you  who believe government and business always do what is best for consumers and taxpayers:shock: but we did not trade trains and buses for cars because cars--some costing more than homes--and roads and gas and upkeep, and insurance, and tags, and licenses, and traffic tickets were cheaper but they got rid of the trains and buses so Detroit and gas and trucking companies could make more money.:cool::cool::cool::cool:

I'm so glad to hear that your mom is better. Just let me know when the best time for attending a meeting will be and I will try to be there.

I kinda missed this story being out of town. Has the commission made any statements about this conduct?
