We took our kids there last week and we loved it! I didn't feel unsafe, or see any drug dealers while we were there. I agree the neighborhood is bad, but I do keep my doors locked anytime I'm in a rough area. Anyway, the kids had a great time and I loved the slide myself

mom since you stated that you were not in law enforcement, I believe the city has a ride along program...Maybe if you rode with them it would open up a different view point for you. Sometimes things can happen under our noses and we miss it because we didn't know what we were looking at...If you took the oportunity and rode with an officer it might open up a different world and they way things are viewed..

I think there should be more than one city pool and in another area. Now, I for one am interracially married so because black people are there or in the neighborhood is not what bothers me. The fact that the kids that are let in there are unattended by their parents and unruly, bothers me. Most of the kids in there that I am referring to just happen to be black. The life guards do nothing to control them and it's just not a pleasant environment for me or my family. I guess others have lesser expectations of children's behavior but for me, it's out of control there and like I have said before, children, horseplay and water spells disaster!

So she currently has a good opinion of this pool, enjoys going there, and has never had a negative experience, and keeps to herself and her family, and observes common sense safety guidelines by not venturing into the surrounding neighborhood. You suggest she participate in a ride along program in order to "open up a different view point," yet why would she want to? It seems like things are going just fine for her now, and she's using the city pool just exactly the way it was meant to be used. Her situation seems ideal. Why would she want to jeopardize that, and what purpose would it serve? She's serving the needs of herself and her family, and providing good memories for her children of their mom being happy and having fun, and her clear involvement keeps them safe.

Ok.... I will take credit for, but you need to go back and look at some of the other replies where they mention Mexicans, the bad parts of town,Etc Here check this one out http://romewired.com/forum6/2036-6.html Last edited on Wed Jul 9th, 2008 03:47 pm by ronron |

I was just pointing out that the officers and others familiar with what goes on will have a different outlook because they are trained to observe the whole picture......If she wanted to see it from thier point of view there was an opportunity thru the ride along program to see the area with a different set of eyes.......mom since you stated that you were not in law enforcement, I believe the city has a ride along program...Maybe if you rode with them it would open up a different view point for you. April, I was there just 2 weeks ago, last tuesday, the 4th and the Saturday after the 4th, I was told Saturday was the worst day to come by one of the lifeguards just because of how buisy and crowded it is. Everyday I attended the pool i took my husband 2 little girls and 9 year old son, my son was sat out for running after being asked nicely to stop and given a warning and was sat out once more for diving twice. I also witnessed one lifeguard kick out a girl for cursing and another grown man later for cursing. The situation was taken care of pleasently and the lifeguards kept the situation out of the public eye as much as possible. The lifeguards were sitting out kids left and right for running and diving or going down the slide the wrong way. I talked to other moms and dads at the pool who had been attending the pool regularly since open day, and they said that the pool has come a long way and that after the first month they never witnessed a problem or situation with another customer not be taken care of accordingly. Now, obviously you have completely washed your hands of it and will not be visiting the pool again, which is probably good since you are so displeased. I have seen 2 different moms make the lifeguards job much harder because they always have something to complain about, whether it be their kids being sat out or not being allowed to bring a cooler in or some other rule or regulation that makes sense but people like them have to have everything their way. They also make people get out of the pool if they do not have on real swim trunks, so there is noone running around wearing jean shorts and t-shirt and polos in the pool. I was there on a day when a camp was there and I was told that a camp comes everyday except for one day out of the week and on Saturdays. The camp was horrible and the lifeguards had their hands full, I watched 2 different lifeguards get in and save children a number of times and they were sitting them out on first offense, no warnings because apparently that had all been there many times before and knew the rules, I was told afterwards that it was Camp Anthony. From what i have gathered just by watching and talking to other parents, the lifeguards do about all they can.

We've never taken our two to the City Pool. No real reason, we just haven't. Anyway, I guess it's like anything else. Some days are good, some are bad. I do think if it were in a different area (nothing to do with the neighborhoods), it would have a better response. With gas prices what they are, it just doesn't make sense to drive over there when there are other options.

It cracks me up when they sit them in time out on that line. Those kids are just itching to get up. My first day there a kid came flying out of the boys bathroom toward the slide. The little lifeguard that looks like Eli manning yelled walk and 2 seconds later that kid busted hard. I thought he had knocked himself out. People have to realize the rules are there for a reason. The one true complaint I have that if no coolers are allowed then serve something halfway considered a meal around lunch time. I would buy it. Those nachos just dont do it and I dont want my kids eating nachos for lunch. We go right after we eat so I can avoid the whole snack shak mess.

Thank you jess...said it all. I am not in law enforcement but know several who are both city and county and the occasional brownie. I asked one of the city guys about it before I went and he said the pool was never a problem and he never had a single call to THAT location and didn't know of one to that location. I guess he knew me well enough to know I wasnt going to go on a nature walk up church street to the hop and shop though. They do not do ride alongs anymore by the way. Liability is too high. Unless you are the chaplain or an explorer-type person..or maybe fricks, no ride alongs allowed unless that has changed very recently anyway. Again, I will say that I have no doubt what you say is true but, on my outings to the pool which have been several and many friends of ours with children my daughter''s age, we have had no problem and it has been very pleasant with the exception of a wild child that again happens anywhere. I would rather keep it that way instead of looking for trouble. Enough of it finds me just fine.

Well this is all very amusing i must say..... first off if you havent been to this pool this year your comments are pretty much useless. this blog is all about opinions of the city pool right? well if you have been in the past few years and again this year you know there is a huge difference. this year it is soooooo much better. talk about the neighborhood all you want but the pool is safe, clean, well managed, and family friendly. i agree that the rec dept. needs to look in to possibly building more pools and parks of this nature but as i understand they just blew alot of money renovating this old one. and just to touch on what someone said earlier about the location of the pool.... one of my friends was telling me that there used to be a fire station beside the pool untill they built the one near the ball fields on kingston, and like all rundown areas of towns im sure that that neighborhood was once a really nice part of town..... that is untill they built housing projects right next door. anyway.... i have been to this city pool many times this year and have yet to be dissapointed except once when it rained. if there are parents reading this deciding whether or not to go based upon someone else's opinion then dont let that happen. just drive by one day and check it out for yourself, who knows you might actually have a good time..... or maybe not. but at least do yourself and your kids a favor and form your own opinions.

"Dirtybird what if Romegasir is prejudice? Is that not his right as an American? Did not his ancestors fight and die so that he would have the right to say what he believes? When you take away the right of an individual to speak his mind, you make him a slave. Tyranny is tyranny whether it comes from King George, Big Government or Narrow-minded political correctness." hahaha...... that has to be one of the dumbest things ive ever read, what does it have to do with ANYTHING. "is that not his right as an american?" hahahahaha. "King George and big government" oh man.... how do you know what wars his ancestors fought in. hahaha, thanks for the history lesson though.
