This is rediculous... seriously, i lived in Atlanta for 14 years and let me say that Rome's city pool is leaps and bounds ahead of anything down there. I saw the picture of it on the front page of the paper today and that little boy looked like he was having soo much fun, so i packed my little ones in the car and we had a super fun time there. There were quite a few kids at first but i think they were a camp or something, and the counselors helped to keep them in order. Right when we got there i already knew it was a great family environment. The lady at the window was so nice and cheerful, it made us feel very welcome. My 5 year old son even commented to me "daddy that lady was nice!" There is a cool fountain that my kids absolutely loved, but the slide is the best part! I even went down it a few times. As for the lifeguards, they were also very friendly and informative, they did not seem intimidated at all, i had my little girl up on my shoulders and one young woman asked nicely for me to put her down and explained why the rule was in place... but don't take her for timid at all because a few minutes later she was blowing her whistle and putting children in time out for running around the pool deck. By the way if that is what you call a bad area of town you should take a visit to Atlanta sometime. Maybe a little more open-mindedness about other people's cultures wouldn't hurt either.

not the worst area of rome..............but definitely in the top 5.................................and I don't think the african american culture would want ANYONE to drive through North Rome and think that THAT was a cross section or representation of african american culture.............................................so, PLEASE

do not drop your kid off at Nelm St just to show them how open minded their parent is on "other cultures"......................................................................

Why does everyone get so hung up on a "certain" part of town?  I just don't get it, why everything has to be about where it's at or who frequents it.  We are all Americans.  (well, except for the illegals?)

I don't think that is a "typical" neighborhood but to be quite honest with you, I had a good friend in high school that lived on Perkins St and I went to her house often.  I also walked down the road.   I grew up here and have friends in EVERY single corner of Rome and Floyd County.  I'm not trying to say that everywhere in Rome is perfectly safe BUT there's not anywhere here that I'm scared to go.  Maybe it's a familiarity thing or the idea that I really feel like we are all just human beings trying to make it through whatever crappy hand we have been dealt.  My grandparents lived on North Broad when I was little, my dad lived in that area (chambers) as a kid and plenty of other areas that some would call "third world"  but that was a long time ago.  As a kid, I went to the area two blocks from the pool quite often as that is where my half sister lived with her mother by the cemetary.  I love the nachos at the Cantina down the street.  Like I said, I just don't get it.  You can say whatever about me being "out of my league"  but it's your thought, not mine.  To me, a third world country is a place like India or South Africa where people live literally in a shanty laid against something to keep out the wet and walking barefoot through sewage to get water, while short miles away, tourists flock to BIG HUGE resorts, etc.  3rd world is not America, in a "run down" area with a water source, a sewage source, and anything one needs within reach and for those willing to work for it.

Sorry, not buying it.

Southern I agree with you on all but the 3rd world part.

3rd world is not America, in a "run down" area with a water source, a sewage source, and anything one needs within reach and for those willing to work for it.

I can show you many sections of America that are just as bad as other parts of the 3rd world nations.

None in Rome are anywhere near that bad, but there are many in the USA that most Church's and governments do not want the world to know exist.

I have always said feed the kids at home first then and only then think about other countries.  We must heal ourselves before we can heal others effectively.

I cannot believe anyone would consider this area 3rd world.  We are talking about the city pool..the one with the Ledbetter mansion less than a mile away?  That one? some of the living conditions are what some people might not want for themselves but many happy families live over there with a richer family history than any of us.  I think this is turning into a race conversation and we know where that goes.  As I said before, I have been a couple of times this week for the first time and had a great time.  Contrary to popular believe, there were a lot more Caucasian folk than that of the African American sort.  Can someone tell me why it should matter?  UGH.. its so disgusting.

You know what I dont like about the area?  The scenery is that of a cemetery.  I personally dont like them.  Nothing good has ever happened to me in one of them and I dont visit them near as much as I should (loved ones) as I would rather visit a place that I shared with that person.  I literally have panic attacks in them sometimes.  Think we can do something about that?  Maybe move it somewhere else?

Cemetaries are a great history link to the past, but the day will come when all must be cremated just to save room for the living.  Of course we could be like a french mayor and just demand no one dies.

Oh, I agree with you.  Myrtle Hill is cool but I forced myself to go through it and my respirations increased and it became 20 degrees hotter.  I dont know why I get that way.  I do not like the whole ritual of wakes and burials anyway.  The atmosphere of a reunion at wakes drives me crazy.  I dont want one and I certainly dont want people staring at me.  Cant stand it now, why then.  I want every one to have a party and I am going to record myself saying if you have not seen me in 5 years, get out unless we have kept in contact via phone, email or other forms leave.  That would be cool :)

I have one policy party with me when I am alive, when I am dead burn my butt and get over it.  Then goto the bar and support the economy.  Make a charitable donation to the waitress or bartneder in my name and have a good night.

and seeing through my smoke screen ends with what???? they don't like me????? they write me a letter from the neighborhood association telling me that they've seen through my smoke screen??????

the only people who say stuff like that, are the ones who have never been there.............................friends, LOL.................................................drive down either of those streets, and when you see your future friends standing on the corner, flash a $20 and see how many run over to your car (of course they're looking to earn the 20 legitimately) LOL

Sadly, there are certain parts of town and certain people who frequent it that cause a less safe situation for civilized and gentle people.  It is just reality, regrettable though it may be

And of course we all know I am speaking of Mt Alto.  Don't want to be up there after dark :)
