I just read the story about the rec. department offering swimming lessons for $184 or something like that. Who can afford that? I'm glad my child learned back when it was about $40.

That is just insane. You can get swimming lessons at the Y for $50 a month for non-members and $32 a month for members.

I don't know anyone there, but I can teach a kid like mine was taught. At 18 or so months he dropped it off the end of the diving board. Kid popped right back up. After that it takes practice and you have that big cold pool there. The guy that did my kid told me he only had one to go the bottom. But I'm gonna tell you what, if I had of had a gun, I would have shot him. I think he still teaches, his name is Marable, I think some kinda senator or was, a good guy. If he is not doing any more, he probably knows who is. He could have died.

A similar situation is the reason I can't swim.  I was at a pool when I was younger with my elderly grandmother (who couldn't swim herself, and should have never took me to the pool - but I was persistent).  I accidentally got knocked into the water and almost aspirated.  I am TERRIFIED of the water now.  If it is over waist deep, I ain't getting in. We are working with my daughter now to make sure this doesn't happen to her, and that she doesn't grow up as terrified as I am.

His thinking was the younger the better, they just spent 9 months in water. After the initial training, which I would not carry a gun too. Kinda got to watch them, cause they have no fear of water and we had a pool before the kid was born, perhaps the reason for the kid?  Got a friend, terrified of water cause of a similar situation to yours, I finally taught her to swim here, and she still thanks me, course the bikini didn't hurt. That training was to get them young and survive.  He taught them all to put their finger up and "blow out the candle" kinda gets air into there lungs.  Heard  a report today about secondary drowning in kids.......seems that kids get water in their lungs, then they go home and the lungs cannot deal with the water. Fox news this am. Dang, I would hate to have a kid today, can't have any fun with them anymore, next it is going to be horsey rides, they might fall off your back.

I just saw a story on this, too.  Had never heard of "dry drowning" before.  This kid drowned when he was taking a nap.... a couple of hours AFTER swimming.  Scary stuff!

Richard Marable is teaching swimming thru the Rec. dept. this year at the North Rome pool. My son took lessons from him at about age 7, and Mr. Marable was great.  He actually taught ME to swim in the late 70's. We will take my daughter to him when she is old enough.

I've always had a problem with people profiting off of teaching other people how NOT TO DIE. Just me, I guess, but swimming lessons ought to be free to anyone and everyone.

if you want a big surprise.............................................................................do an open records request for

RFPRA rosters for teams..............then take those names and cross reference them with payments for admission to teams...................................................you might just find that those with the most ability to pay, are the least likely to be required to pay..............................
