Pine Mountain, GA is about 2-1/2 hours away. You can take highway 27 South from Rome and go all the way to Pine Mountain on Hwy 27. Approximately 125 miles.

We went Sunday and took the little ones. We took them to the Wild Life Safari, where there is a small walk around zoo with bears, tigers, etc. and then we drove through, and you can take your own car through (which we did) or go on their bus or rent one of their jeeps. The animals come up to your car and stick their head in to be fed. You can get the bags of food when you get your ticket. There are buffalo, huge steers, lots of deer, Elk, pot bellied pigs, Giraffe, Rhino, Ligers (half lion, half tiger), Zebra,  etc. Very interesting place and the fees were about $16.95 for an adult $13.95 for senior citizens and children. Toddlers 2 and under, Free.

From there, we went to Butts Mill Farm. For the little ones they had:

Pony Rides (10 and under)

Hay rides

Train Rides (10 and under)

Water Slide

Petting Zoo

Fishing - We have the poles and the bait

Playing and tubing in the creek

Wild West Playground

Miniature golf

Bungee Bull Ride

Obstacle Course

Basket Ball Court

Discovery Zone play Area

Noah's Ark Zone play Ground

Roller Racers

Sand boxes

Hours of Operation

Saturday
10am - 7pm

Sunday

10am - 7pm

Daily Admission Tickets - effective 4-29-2006

10 & up

They also have concerts and other entertainment. Of course all of this is near Calloway Gardens. There are many other attractions there but we were looking for the ones that the children would most enjoy, and believe me they did. We drove down and back with virtually no traffic, perhaps because it was Fathers Day but for about 60 miles before you hit Lagrange, there are no stores, nothing except open road and most of the trip was 4 lanes divided. If any of you are interested, you can google Pine Mountain (where they have shopping) to get a list of all the area attractions or google the individual attractions to get their info. Great place to take kids, we plan to go again and rent a cabin for the weekend so we can see everything.

The farm and the Safari are only about 2 miles apart so there is not a lot of driving in between attractions and Big Bear farm is also very close, I think they offer horse back riding.

That does sound like a great trip, especially for the kiddies.  You mentioned renting a cabin, do they also have campsites down there?  I am going to research Pine Mountain for a short trip for the summer. Thanks for the great infomation Spice!

There are several places that rent cabins, some very rustic, some with hot tubs, full kitchens, etc. We have not tried any of them yet so I can't give you any details other than what we read and saw. I just thought it was such a great place, we are going to try to set up a time when my youngest son in ATL and his wife and little boy can meet us there and just have a good old fashioned reunion down there.

The Safari has a restaurant on the premisis and the Butt farm has a little store with snack and the town is full of restaurants. We ate at Chipley's, It is owned by a black lady, very small but the food (country cookin' was very good). Of course if we rent a cabin, we will take our own food and not eat our much.

I'm sorry, newsiewife, I am typing in my sleep this morning. Yes there are campsites near by if I'm not mistaken. I remember reading about them. My idea, for the past few years, of camping is to go to Holiday Inn or rough it at Hampton Inn. I haven't been camping since my children were small. We camped on an Island in the middle of Lake Lanier with about 12 other families, all in tents of course, and I was the only one who remembered to bring a can opener.

I clean house, cook the meals, work in the garden and flower beds, shop for building materials (Barn, Fence, etc.), feed and water the pig, goats, chickens, horses, dogs, cats, etc., cut the grass, keep the vehicles repaired, sew (make, repair, and alter), shop for groceries and animal feeds, take care of the 3 and 5 yr olds every other week (sometimes those weeks get extended to 9 or 10 days, when mom doesn't want to put up with them), Order all planting supplies (plants, seed, trees, etc.), handle all the accounting and generally try to keep things running. If that is not roughing it enough, I don't know what is. And, this is supposed to be my retirement!
