I know that May is a few months away but I wanted to put the word out that there will be a Hot Air Balloon Festival May 16-18 in Chattooga County. It will be in Menlo at the Tillotson Sports Complex on Hwy 48.
We are looking to have craft booths, a Battle of the Bands competition, a carnival as well as approxiamately 10 Hot Air Balloons that will fly on Friday evening, Saturday morning and evening and then again on Sunday morning. There will also be a Hot Air Balloon tethered that people will be able to ride in.
More information to come as details are finalized.
All proceeds will benefit the Menlo Recreation Department and the Chattooga County Tourism Committee.

Cool!! Now the rest of my family can see how cool it is to ride in a hot air balloon, even if it is tethered!!
If you haven't ever taken this kind of ride before, it's very fun!! Not too many opportunities to get to around here.
Do you know if they will be charging for the rides?

| I believe they will be charging for the rides. I'm not sure about the price as everything is still being finalized. I will post more details as they become available.

If anyone knows anyone who would be interested in setting up a craft booth during the festival, send me a PM for more information.
We are also looking for entertainment(ie singers, bands, comedy acts, etc.) to perform on Saturday. We plan to have a fastpitch softball tournament for 12u and 14u girls.
A carnival will be on hand with rides and games.
Admission to the festival is $5.00/carload. Carnival rides will be extra as will concessions, and tethered balloon ride.
We look forward to seeing people from all over North GA. Come out and have fun with us!

No problem. Everyone is excited about it. We hope to make it an annual event if all goes well this year.

This is cool! I can see the sports complex from my front yard in Cloudland. Anybody selling hot air balloon rides? I'd love the chance to get some aerial photos of the area.
Will politicians get a discount on balloon rides for providing their own hot air?

We have been selling sponsorships to cover the cost of getting the balloons here. For a $500.00 sponsorship, they get to ride in the balloon. If the balloons can get all of the sponsors their rides, they will possibly sell rides. From what I understand they generally sell rides for $150 and up. The Menlo Recreation Dept. has bought a sponsorship and are selling tickets for a chance to ride in a balloon. The ride would be for 2 people plus a BBQ lunch with the balloon pilots, and some other prizes for $10.00/ticket. The Dept is selling 500 tickets. If interested in purchasing a ticket or sponsoring a balloon send me a pm for more info. Money from the ticket sells will be used by the Recreation Department to improve our sports programs and buy new equipment such as a playground, etc.
There will also be 1 balloon that will be tethered that will give rides the majority of the day for a small cost. From what I understand, this balloon will rise approximately 20 to 30 feet in the area. All of the other balloons will fly and land elsewhere(where ever the wind takes them).
We have all kinds of activities planned. Buck and Duke are supposed to perform on Saturday afternoon, a fair/carnival will be on hand starting on the 14th of May, craft booths and a trackless train will be giving rides around the ballfields.
Come join the fun and bring your friends and family.

I really do like the idea of having this festival ... I have a couple functional questions regarding the event.
First, how long does one have to decide whether to purchase tickets or sponsor a balloon?
Second, does the sponsorship/ride include space for one person or more than one? (I may have a friend here visiting who might also want a ride)
Third, If you do ride all the way with the balloon, does a ride back to where you started come with it?
Finally, in the event of unfavorable weather, would there be any rescheduled dates?
I'm glad to see this coming to Menlo. If you need any tech/web/publicity help, just let me know.
Redneck Airways: Folks, we have reached our cruising altitude now, so I am going to switch the seat belt sign off. Feel free to move about as you wish, but please stay inside the plane till we land... it's a bit cold outside, and if you walk on the wings it affects the flight pattern.

At first we were only going to sell sponsorships for a limited amount of time. However we are still selling them and probably will for a few more weeks.
Second, the sponsorship includes a ride for 2 people and lunch. The sponsor will have a banner placed on one side of the balloon basket and their name mentioned in brochure and flyers.
Third, you will get a ride back to the festival. Each balloon will have a crew and they will travel to where the balloon lands.
Finally, at this point we have not scheduled any other dates due to weather. So we are all praying for favorable weather.
