I want to address the CVS that is being built on the corner of the Connector (Veterans Memorial Hwy) and Hwy 27/Martha Berry Blvd. This new CVS is going to destroy the view shed of two very important historic sites to the city of Rome and to the State of Georgia: the Gates of Opportunity and the Home of Martha Berry. Berry College is not only recognized by the State of Georgia, but it is World recognized. Now, come on City of Rome and Berry College, are you really this short sited? Not only that, but are you all really this stupid and so blinded by the dollar signs in your eyes? Is trading the quality, integrity and beauty of one of Georgia's State treasures really worth the revenue that you are going to make off of this new CVS? This new CVS that is within a 1 mile radius of 3 other drugstores? Tourism is second only to agribusiness as one of top industries in Georgia. The industry employs 209,500 Georgians, contributes $25 billion in direct and indirect dollars to the economy, and brings in $1.12 billion in state and local tax revenues. Heritage Tourism is part of that. Heritage tourists stay longer and spend more than regular tourists. With that said: WHAT IS THE CITY OF ROME AND BERRY COLLEGE DOING? Do they not realize that they are going to trade the integrity and beauty of a World recognized college and 2 of its integral historical sites for a short sited revenue quickie, and deny Romans and Georgians the opportunity to enjoy the beauty and revenue that is coming as the tourism industry in Georgia grows?

I'm so sad when I pass there and it looks so bare. They're clearing it out fast. How many CVS's does one town need??

Will it be another of those three story high ground floor use only buildings they have built lately? Speaking of the Gate of Opportunity why is it always closed?

The historic Gate of Opportunity (which is permanently closed) was originally the gate that opened onto the road that led to the Administration building, which was the Hoge Building. This is the big white frame building at the end of that road. When Berry outgrew Hoge as an administration building and built Hermann Hall, the main gate moved down the road, but the Gate of Opportunity remained open, as did the service road, which is the most beautiful road on campus in the fall. Then the Bypass was built, people trying to exit and enter Berry via the Gate of Opportunity kept causing accidents, so Berry closed that gate permanently and officially moved the "Gate of Opportunity" down the road to the main gate. As a Rome native, two time Berry graduate, former student worker at Oak Hill, and former Berry staff member, it hurts to see CVS go up and some of the old "Berry houses" come down, but I am trying to understand the progress that it represents. I know that the adminsitration is trying to balance a lot of balls in the air, so I have to trust them...not that I like it, however.

I don't see how the CVS damages the "view sheds" of Berry and Oak Hill. Oak Hill is on the southeast corner of the intersection. From no place on Martha Berry or on the connector can you see anything of the Oak Hill property but trees. A CVS rising there will not keep anyone from seeing those trees. As I understand, they're even leaving a buffer of trees right up against the connector. Same goes for Berry. Faculty Row, which isn't even the heart of the Berry campus but rather the outskirts that many students and tourists never even see, resides on the northwest corner of the intersection, and again, there's a fairly thick stand of trees along the connector and along Martha Berry...even where the trees are a bit thinner, such as where the power lines enter campus, all you're looking at is someone's back porch or at enormous propane tanks (did you know those were there? I understand that if those are ever compromised in any way, they have to evacuate a 5-mile radius because that would be the debris field). Someone on Redmond Rd wouldn't have been able to see Berry from there anyway due to the trees between Redmond and the loop...so again, I don't see how the "view shed" is compromised. It's just trees. Likewise, I don't see how someone at Oak Hill or on the Berry campus will have their view of any of the beautiful foliage compromised by the building of a CVS there. Can anyone confirm, does Berry retain ownership of that corner? Seems I recall that they still own the land. It's clear Berry's hurting for money right now - colleges are often funded by endowments, and endowments only provide operating funds if they're earning money. In a down economy, the endowment doesn't post earnings, so the college has to do things to bring in extra money, and they have to eat into the principle on the endowment. Thus they're pulling a hail mary throwing up two new dorms when they can't fill the existing dorms, figuring more students = more money, and they're developing a hunk of their land to generate ongoing income (just the way they leased land to Flordia Rock for 50 years or whatever, and have sold off chunks of land along Technology Pkwy.) If the choice is between some development of land that at least a generation has always considered to be "off campus" or major cutbacks in academic programs, services, staff, etc., Berry's opting for that which hurts the fewest people. When the dot com bubble burst, we saw the same stuff happening, but not on the same scale....lots of logging then (granted old Bob Parker was taking his cut of that) and a few cutbacks were noticeable too.

Sheesh everyone wants jobs but no one wants change. Sorry people you just can not have one without the other. If you want jobs for you and you kids, and do not want to drive to Atlanta then there must be change. Besides I also do not see how that corner effects the view of the other two corners. It is not like I see many people standing at the gate looking at the redmond light corner admiring the view of cars speeding by getting camera shots.

If you want jobs for you and you kids, and do not want to drive to Atlanta then there must be change. Change? We already have how many CVS'S in Rome? They pay what? Minimum wage? They hire what? Part-time? Change would be some jobs that pay well and can support a family. That's why ppl drive to Atlanta, Cartersville, etc.. I don't have a problem with where it's going. Like you, it's not really taking away anything major from that corner. I have a problem with another CVS coming in. How many drug stores does one town need? Especially drug stores of the same name. About all you can do here is buy a car (how many car lots do we have now?), or get something to eat. Oh yeah, or go to the 482619 drugstores we have here.

It's too expensive- however, I use CVS pharmacy here in Armuchee as I've been using them for 18 years and it's knowing them and how they treat me is why I've always used them-plus it's convenient.

I remember a few years ago they had 2 for awhile out here in Armuchee- one by Food Lion and another one by CVS-I guess they realized that was too close after the facts- go figure-never did understand why they opened 2 so close together.Thatguy67 wrote:Rome already has 2 CVS stores. Some of you people need to get a life. Who cares how many CVS stores are here Thats their business. If you don't like it don't go there. But i bet those that get a job there will be glad they built it. Also it will improve the looks at that corner.

I haven't been in a CVS in I can't tell you how long. There are too many other options and they are too expensive. Yep, I bet those that get a job will be glad to make minimum wage and work maybe 20 hrs. a week? We have plenty of those type jobs around here. Improving the looks at the corner would be building something that will bring in lots of business. To tell ppl to get a life is rude.
