You pay the taxes on it. Ledbetter has optioned to buy the property from the city for a fraction of the value of the land.

Oldman, As long as you are not calling anyone nasty names, or giving out their private information, I see no reason for you not to be welcome. That is the purpose of the forums, to be able to debate our opinions with each other. If we dissagree, that is as acceptable as agreement. If a part of your life and a part of my life includes posting on these forums, and learning what others think and what is going on in our comunity, then I would say we both have a life.

They want a matching strip mall type deal across the street from the one they just built. That is such a pretty tract of land; it'll be a shame if people just let them have it without insisting on some greenspace along with it. Do you remember what was there before? An old run down building that was falling in - it was an eyesore! I'm glad that they put in the Olive Garden and a Starbucks!

Didn't say anything against the development that's already there--said I didn't want them to tear down the trees and destroy the land that's across the street. Also--I find this common & curious: People say "well it's better than what was there before" as a way of justifying a strip mall or big box store. Why doesn't anyone ever say "well it's better than it was before, but it isn't as good as it could have been"? What's wrong with us that we just accept, instead of demanding better? For example, why did they have to knock down every tree from the parking lot to the river along the Ridge Ferry Trail for their development? Why do they continue to have silt fences with no active construction, or gobs of trash from the construction crew littering that hillside by the river? Why don't they put the same landscaping efforts into what they destroyed as they do the little islands of roses & such over at the new Kroger? Why does it have to be business vs. environment (I don't just mean green environment, but quality of life environment)? Why can't it be both? Enough whining. Got my all worked up. Sorry--putting away the soapbox now.

When we have all the empty shopping centers in town, why build another one?

The reason communities have planning commissions; zoning laws, groups and/or commissions; commerce and/or business groups; and etc. is because they are trying to balance progress with beauty and preserve history while adjusting the standard of living with modernization. Our community has these wonderful types of organizations. That said, I think it's great that folks can get together and discuss all sorts of avenues to implement and/or resist these changes. Most of us can understand the differences in the discussions whether our sympathies lie more in one direction than another. I like reading this forum on all sorts of subjects. And I like to read folks freely discussing anything they like as long as they adhere to the rules. What difference does it make how anyone spends his/her time? Some people like to read books in a bathtub. Maybe they want to watch television all day. This forum gives us multiple opportunities to choose how we want to spend some time in camaraderie, exchange information, share things, make friends, pray together, argue, and unfortunately, break down completely into wildcats sometimes. So I think that makes us humans. And I think there are a lot of humans here. After a short time, people can recognize a certain ebb and flow on this forum: we like to talk about things. We like entertaining one another. We like to be entertained by one another. So we chat on just about anything we can think of if for no other reason than to connect with one another and exchange a 'feeling.' We enjoy ourselves together. So you are part of my life now whether I am mouthing off a lot or not. I officially declare you folks as part of my loved ones. If that doesn't suit anyone else's standard of living and I still need to get more of a life, well, I don't care. I enjoy reading this in the morning after the grandgirls are off to school and I get my cup of coffee. And I enjoy connecting in the early morning like this when I'm awake. Because I know I can come here and read your words full of life and living. And I love you for writing them.

so that all the patients from ALL the area clinics and hospitals(rome is a medical community, by the way)...availability to fast, drive thru- prescriptions.... and all the college students will have fast access to the energy drinks, and snacks.and personal needs , dorm room necessities, . they need to take those long all nighters studying...its simply economics 101.... why not. with a bank next door, all they need now is a checkers, or a burger king and the block will be complete... .. i hope to see a few cvs popping up in lindale. hopefully they will all be 24 hour stores.... we need one on every street corner.... yep, finally a place to call home...another corner drug store.... (and another place for the police to respond to when shoplifters strike, or forged prescriptions )... add this to the list also... martha berry would roll over if she only knew this was happening..to her beloved landscape... .

If the CVS is being built behind the Wachovia then I don't understand what the big deal is. That whole block is already developed. Is that where it is going or what? Because if it is then it doesn't make sense to gripe over a building being placed next to other existing businesses.

Yes behind the Wachovia, where yes there was some tree cover, along with some old houses that looked like garbage. As for the area across from the olive garden, I to remember the nice pond there. It was always filled with garbage and looked like an oil slick. Now it is little drainage and tons of mosquito's. As we just confirmed west nile in Floyd county, I am all for cleaning it up some making look nicer as the proposed site did look rather nice. They propose to reshape the creek make nice little bridges and a walkway. I liked it myself.

I have to agree. Change is going to happen and construction will continue with the growth of Rome, hopefully encouraging new industry and business into the area. We can't have it both ways. We want better job opportunities, increased wages, but no change or growth? Just isn't going to happen. I see it as the area prospering because businesses seem to be weighing the risk and still putting in strip malls and new stores. I don't shop at CVS except for perscriptions (which happens every 10 years or so), but I have been known to run in for a last minute item. I am sure they did their studies on the value of putting one in on that corner. I see little reason to think that it would affect the other corners that are tree lined. I know a number of good, hard working teens that cannot locate any job right now, so any part-time job that would be open to them is a benefit. I don't think Martha Berry would 'roll over in her grave'. I give her more credit than that.. She loved her school and things were always changing even in her lifetime. It is still the largest college campus in the world, if I remember correctly.
