You know, it's funny what people like when they don't know it's there. I couldn't pay my husband to eat sour cream or put it on his potato or anything like that. But he absolutely loves the dishes I make that have it in there....lol

so what you trying to say
i never leave less than $4 for lunch or 20% which ever is more unless the service was bad.

I've been to the Olive Garden at lunch, ordered from the lunch menu, received what appeard to be a lunch portion or smaller, and was charged for a dinner portion. It could be an easy enough error, but the server didn't seem surprised or apologetic. They've also charged for a drink when I've ordered water. I've never requested anything special, but I've also heard about they types of charges mentioned by romegasir.
As far as tipping, I realize the wait staff depends on the tips and often are required to split them. I don't think I could do the job well, either, and am amazed by those who do. I always try to tip at least 20%. If I can't leave a decent tip, then I'd rather not go to the restaurant.

you guys are the exception. you would be surprised by the number of people who have stopped tipping altogether. i personally have had several and i admit, there are times when i get overwhelmed but for the most part i feel as if i give good service and the tables that have not tipped me did not have poor service. other servers are starting to have this happen too. although it is the exception it is starting to happen.
needless to say, i'm currently looking for a State job. I have a degree, just no where to use it.

20% tip is enough in my opinion if you get decent service.
Exceptional service will get you more than that with me. I have been known to leave $5 tip at lunch but it isn't often.
20% of $7 is $1.40. If I get good service then the average is $2 tip. I believe that to be fair.

Ditto! I agree it's fair.
What should we do about bad service? It's hard for me to leave anything for someone that never returned to the table.
Example: You get seated. Your order is taken. Your food is brought. You have to chase someone down to get a refill. You feel totally ignored once your food is brought. You don't see the waitress again.
What kind of tip did he/she earn?
Example: It's a buffet. You were seated, but everything you do yourself. What is a tip for?? Because someone sat you at a table?
We tip accordingly, but I also think a tip is earned.

Also keep in mind anyone in a tip position gets paid a very low hourly wage.
if an employee is in a tipped position, such as a server in a restaurant, then the employer is only required to pay that employee at a rate of $2.13 per hour.

I give 15% if I get what I expect............................20% or higher if at some point during the meal I think or say "dang, this waiter/waitress is good", and 0 if I'm disappointed by the service (not the food)..........................
talk to your friends for 15 minutes while my drink is empty? Zero
Disappear and come back smelling like a Marlboro man? Zero
Get my order wrong? Zero (this one saves me lots of money)
Tell me about one of your personal problems (or more)? Zero
Forget to bring me something I've asked for? (this usually happens.........can I get some ketchup??? Why SURE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!........ten minutes later, no ketchup)................? Zero
However, here is the caveat, I don't leave less than $3 unless I leave $0............................so up to $15 check, you get $3 or more if you bring me what I ask for in a reasonable amount of time...............................................surprising how difficult that seems to be.
