I am a Conservative and I respect a woman who is self sufficient and knows she is going to have a child that will be challenged.

As I have said before, once people learn more about her, the more confident they will become. And I am disheartened by the response by many females that short shrifts her by thinking she was chosen only to be used as a female vote getter. There is much more to this woman than that, and I'd expect women who vote to at least delve into the facts before jumping to conclusions.

I was not at home when this announcement took place but was told that he had chosen a woman. My first thought was as many, what is he thinking. After watching and listening to different news sources including the good ole Communists News Network(CNN) I think he made an excellent choice. This lady seems that she will take no crap from anyone and has a good head on her shoulder. Although I do not agree with all she stands for as with any politician I do believe she will do what is best for this country. Did any one see Ted Nugent on, I believe cnbc, and I cant remember the guys name that does the show. People can say what they want about Ted but he made some of the best points I have heard in a long time. I believe it was filmed before McCains announcement.

Look, Waterhead, I'm going to be completely upfront here and tell you there's no way that by having Palin running as VP is going to make voting Replican this year any more attractive for me. My desire to end the Iraq war, address concerns with our failing health care system, and poor economy pushed this Independent toward the Democratic offerings early on... despite the fact that I had voted Republican most of my life. Did you see the ads that McCain ran during the Democratic convention where he agreed with Hillary Clinton's criticism of Obama's lack of experience? The timing of these ads alone suggest that he was courting her staunchest of supporters. They were terrific ads, however, in light of the fact that he now has chosen a female running mate with even less experience than Obama, makes his motives in choosing Palin very apparent to me. McCain is trying to pull off another flip-flop, and I don't think this one is going to slip past the voters. Last edited on Sun Aug 31st, 2008 12:32 am by Wild H Woman |

I don't believe he was going after the feminine vote at all.. McCain honestly is not a favorite of the conservative groups (better of two evils?) but this woman has all the characteristics to draw that vote; professed Christian, pro-life, mother of 5, one in Iraq and one with Downs, for smaller government with more accountability. She may not have the experience, but she isn't running for president either. All that doesn't get my vote quite yet (as I have little faith in either Obama or McCain), but I honestly think it was an effective choice to encourage those sitting on the sidelines shaking our heads, to take a second look at his campaign. Only one person I absolutely know has my vote for this election.. Barry Loudermilk. After that, it could be anyone's guess. Oh, and why would the fact that she was better looking than, let's say, Hillary, have anything to do with her capabilities? Last edited on Sun Aug 31st, 2008 03:36 pm by beckymc |

I tend to agree with you in part, beckymc, when you say "she isn't running for president." Brings up a good point: I don't think the vice presidential choices matter that much. I think people vote for the top of the ticket. If that's true, then the only way to look at those choices is how those choices reflect on the decision-making ability of the presidential candidate. Obama's choice of Biden was viewed as a well-picked compliment, and someone who could act as attack dog during the campaign and also round out that foreign policy aspect. Obama's choice is being spun as wise, presidential, etc. They've worked together before, they know each other, they share the same issues, etc. McCain's choice of Palin is being spun as a gamble. He is emphasizing two things with his choice: his maverick nature, and his separation from the current administration. He has to do those two things to win, but he also has to court the conservative vote. Palin has no national experience either leading or campaigning, she has not seen Alaska through an entire budget cycle yet, and they met one time at a governor's dinner months ago before he called last week to offer her the job. McCain's top issue is Iraq, yet when asked about it by the Alaskan Business Monthly, she said "I've been so focused on state government, I haven't really focused much on the war in Iraq." So, to summarize, Obama's first presidential decision=wise, McCain's first presidential decision=gamble. Who knows how that's going to play out? It might work perfectly for each of them and fit their individual natures. It's just getting more and more interesting to watch! I am flat out loving this election season.

OF COURSE she isn't running for president BUT the vice presidential canddiate should make a huge difference because in the event that something happens to your president (either death or just unable to carry out his duties due to bad health, surgery, etc.) , the vice president becomes your president so yes it does matter! Also, nobody is short selling Palin or saying she isn't a good politician, just saying there were more people better qualified and bringing up the fact that McCain is the one that has talked about experience being so important. On top of that, we're not assuming that he picked her to appeal to women - his own camp from campaign advisors to his staff has openly said that is why she was picked!

Sometimes you need to do what mccain did and go out a get new ideas like Palin to instead of the stale old politicians that he could have chose from. I think this country needs a fresh face and ideas to get out of slump or spiral downfall

VP has only taken the position of president in 9 times out of 43 presidents. Hardly something to base a vote, although I will concede that it might have some minor value to consider. She still has more executive experience than Obama. You need to put the entire picture together and stop pulling ONE item out of the hat. She was chosen for more qualities than just because she was a woman, but because she could reach those that wouldn't vote for McCain without her. For example, her selection has pulled Dr. James Dobson over to the McCain camp. Ah well, I do think it will be exciting over the next couple of months. And, no.. I don't know who I am voting for at this point.

I did not read everything on this thread so excuse me if I repeat what someone else has said... First of all most people in this country are unfortunately just "voters". That means they go to the polls and merely vote because they like a certain candidate. The reasons for their liking who they vote for are varied. Race, sex, looks, are some of the more ignorant reasons. One single solitary thing someone said or did whether it be negative or positive is another ridiculous reason. McCain and his people made a decision which in my opinion was a stroke of genius. They realize that most people do vote with their hearts and not because of the issues. Especially women and miniorities. They know that most of this country is made up of caucasions and most of those are women who will vote for a candidate simply because they have a woman on the ticket. Before anyone gets their feathers ruffled and offended by what I am saying remember that you are one person and everybody is not like you. I was taught a long time ago to look at things for what they are. This country is not made up of intelligent people and just because you think a certain way does not mean everbody else does. Trust me if you are truly voting on the issues then you are in the miniority. Obama's decision for VP was a good one as far as the big picture goes. It may not get him votes, but if he wins he knows that Biden's pull in Washington will help. McCain's choice was clearly to get undecided white female voters who may have voted for Hillary. Having said that about the Republican VP candidate I have to say that I like her. She brings more to the table than you may realize. She may not have alot of experience, but she seems tough and she has a good sense of right and wrong which we should all agree is something Washington needs. Another point I want to make is why all of a sudden are Democrats making Palin's lack of experience an issue. Obama is not experienced either. As a matter of fact unless there is an incumbent running then there is no candidate that has experience being president. In other words John McCain who has been a Senator for quite a while now doesn't have any time as president. Every election the talk about "experience" comes up and yet the voters don't care. They still vote like they did when they were in high school. Usually for the one they like the most and not because their stand on the issues.

" I predict b. HUSSEIN obamba and his cronies start slinging the worst-first." Any takers?

Well put, Leaningonhim... and these same people not only vote, but reproduce! I don't like politics, but I do care about my country enough to research and vote appropriately. Another reason why I stay away from the media blitz. I admit, I may be a little out of the loop with popularity contests, but I also don't vote by gender, race, or media influence.
