The possibilities: Antifreeze. Did anyone do any preliminary testing to see if that's what it is? Bigfoot piddle. Possible that bigfoot piddled in the creek just before dying in the North Georgia Wilderness whereupon he was found dead in an icebox. Dye. Used by the Rome Water and Sewer department to test systems where there is a chance of either "exfiltration" (stuff is getting out when it is not supposed to), or "huh, there's no record of where this leads. Let's put some dye in it and see" (due to the fact that for ages, no one kept a record of what was put where), or perhaps there's an indication that someone wants to put in a business in a delicate area, and to be proactive any drainage in said area is tested for environmental impact. I am placing my bet on number two. (but you all know me, and the explanation with the most letters in it is normally the right one)

Now on the front page, it was dye. Classic case of one hand not knowing what the other hand was doing...and we get this gem from RNW:He said the dye is completely harmless and does not pose a danger. That makes me feel better...it's not harmful, and it doesn't pose a danger. Now, I have heard of stuff being dangerous but not harmful (your stove can be dangerous, but it's not harmful, for example) but have you ever heard of something being harmful but not dangerous?

Looked like anti freeze to me. But I've seen that before over there when the little guy and I were exploring. RPD told me the same thing. Dye. Don't go near the water

agreed. I used "harmless" and "not harmful" interchangeably in my post. I was simply suggesting that it is impossible for something to be both harmful and not dangerous, therefore, why was it necessary to say it was harmless and did not pose a danger. It's like adding extra superfluous words. Would've been more beneficial to say "officials say that the dye poses no danger to the river's ecosystem or to the public." I agree, I wouldn't drink it either.

Water is harmless. Except if you drink too much, breathe it, or splash it on the wrong person. The toxicity of the dye is what was in question, and it's non-toxic.

I think I was unkind to the responders in my original post, so let me apologize, I'm sorry, they wouldn't have had any reason to suspect that was dye. And think about it: even though it was not a spill, we're lucky that they responded as quickly and efficiently as they did. If anything, regardless of any embarassment, we as a community ought to be proud that this was nailed down as quickly as it was. It says a lot about the professionalism of the responders envolved. Perhaps the "good old boy" system everybody is whining about isn't as bad as they make it sound? Kudos and hats off to everybody envolved, and thank goodness this wasn't something worse!
