Watson is reporting a male body.  Promises to keep updating when more news comes in.

Watson has the details but can't release the info until notification of next of kin. Sad time for some family. Say a prayer for them.

we don't cover Chattooga county but I am interested in what the Summerville news has on this... I am sure Jason Espy is all over it.

He is well connected up that way with sources.

Greetings to everyone in Rome. Yes. We did have an unfortunate incident around mid-day. We were on the scene and checked into the matter. From all indications right now, it looks like suicide.

The editor up here, my dad (a family run newspaper) is considering whether to cover and to what extent to cover this story. Our policy is that we normally don't cover suicides. Under some circumstances, like a high profile public official etc., we will make mention of the tragedy.

Our prayers go out to the family tonight. We feel for them in their time of grief. To our neighbors in Floyd County, we ask you to keep the family in your prayers as well.

Sincerely,
Jason Espy

A suicide?  How horrible for the family. Will keep them in my thoughts and prayers this evening.

Thank you, Jason, for the information.

Why not cover self inflicted deaths? It confirms the death wasnt a product of a murder by some crazed person still on the loose.

I do understand showing respect for a family in a small town enviroment but the statement seems to show the control of some over released information within a small town.

MA:  I don't know if this is the case with the Summerville News or not, however, many media outlets won't cover suicides because after reporting it, there's often an uptick in suicide, especially among young people.  There has been quite a bit of research that confirms this.  When it is reported, though, special care has to be taken not to describe the method in detail, or to "glorify" it.  I do understand your point, though, about easing the public's mind about a killer being on the loose, especially in a state park in the summer.  I don't believe that the media outlets are trying to "control" the information released by not reporting suicide or the details surrounding it.  Perhaps they are just trying to be responsible in their reporting.

Bomb threats are another thing that the media sometimes doesn't want to publicize.  We just had one in Chattanooga against Blue Cross Blue Shield.  Normally, these incidents are not reported much either, for the fear of copy cats, but this one was widespread, affecting multiple buildings and many people.

I think the operative word  here is  professional discretion... to the conscientious  media person(s)...sometimes  the use of discretion is  polite, and professional...im glad there are  a few out there who  examine the circumstances before they  release all details.
