Dogs caught up to a fawn deer in the Everett Springs area late Friday, but it was not your run of the mill fawn. This deer had two pelvic regions and two sets of hind legs. Six legs in all. Dr. George Gallagher at Berry College says the deer underwent surgery Saturday to repair damages caused by the dogs, it’s long term prognosis apparently good, but it’s chances of survival in the wild may be minimal.

Channel 2 also did a story on it...

I believe that they did. I just think that it will probably not e able to be released back into that wild.

I believe the surgery was to repair damage done by the dogs. The deer has not only four hind legs but two pelvic regions and surgery to correct that may not be an option. They are discussing sending the deer to the University of Georgia for studies.

Spice is correct. The surgery was to repair the damage from the dogs. They are sending the deer to UGA where it will live out a happy and danger free life.

Mutations like this are uncommon but not unheard of in animals (and people).  They are called homeotic mutations.  Unfortunate little fellows like this helped scientists unravel the control mechinisims that let embryos know where to put all of our body parts.  I hope he lives a happy life.
