I stated this on another thread and I'm going to state it on this one also. For over 5 years, I have e-mailed, called and written our state representatives begging for harsher laws to get drivers off the roads who have no license or insurance. We have thousands of drivers who are in this country illegally who fit this description. It could be said that some of them are ignorant of our driving laws. Commissioner Fricks is a US Citizen, a citizen of the state of Georgia and a Commissioner in Floyd county. I do not believe he is ignorant of our driving laws. By trying to present his ID as a commissioner, not once but several times, to the arresting officer instead of his drivers license (which he knew was suspended, and had been since 2001), he was trying to use his position as a commissioner to avoid having the law apply to him. There is also the issue of using the tag registered to another vehicle, another law broken. His wife did show proof of insurance to get him out on bond but the law says you are to carry that proof with you when you are driving, unless I'm mistaken. So many of our elected officials seem to think that their position gives them a free pass that allows them to be above punishment that the ordinary citizen would receive for the same offense. In light of all this, I have decided to run for dog catcher next year. Can I count on your vote? ![]() Dog Driving

I'm a bit confused by the statements in the Rome News Tribune..............................................i'm fairly certain, that there is no instance in which "proof of insurance" would be required to get bond.........................................................are they asking us to believe that if you don't have insurance, you can't get bond????????????????????????????????? That doesn't make sense............................................... RNW did a great job breaking this story and it's a shame that he'll get no direct statement from Garry Fricks...................why would he talk to RNW?????? It's much better to talk to reporters who are willing to swallow BS and are forbidden by their management from confirming what you say...................................... I predict a backlash against RN-T for their obvious covering up of the story...........................(which has been removed from the front page of their website already)....................

Fricks has put soooo many excuses as to why!!! He is blaming procrastination... Heard that his wife works at RNT so of course it isn't on the front page.. He is such a "FRICKIN"" liar....

I guess my question is this...... i work for the county, and drive a county vehicle, EVERY year my license is checked and copied and put in i would assume my file. Does the other branches of county offices...example.. water dept, sheriffs office, ones that drive county vehicles, do they check the license yearly?.....

I think this is a massive failure of judgement on Fricks' part. Attempting to use his position to circumvent justice also shows contempt for the system that he is sworn to uphold. We trust this man to make public law that we all have to abide by. We now know he's a man of poor judgement and low character. The only way to rectify that is at the polls. To me, it's part of a broad pattern of poor judgement and irresponsibility exhibited by the entire board. The fact that poor budgeting for fuels has caused a reduction in public safety services while the county fritters away money on publicly-funded pandering efforts like the "Entice" case infuriates me.

Okay, I just called the RN-T and talked with Beth. I asked for Mike Columbo but he was unavailable, so I just asked her my question. I asked her if RN-T would be printing information on the Fricks arrest? She kind of hesitated and said, "you mean the suspended license case?". And I said, "yes, the one with Commissioner Fricks". She fumbled around a bit in surprise I am sure and said that she didn't know why it wasn't printed or if it would be but maybe they were waiting on more information on the case. I simply stated that it was on RNW and Q102 this morning and that I was surprised it was not reported in RN-T. She just told me she didn't know and that I could talk to Mr. Columbo about it. So I told her I would call him back shortly. So, why don't several of us just call Mike and ask him why the paper isn't reporting on a COUNTY COMMISSIONER being arrested? The number is 706-290-5252. P.S. I grew up with Mr. Fricks all my childhood, in fact, my father worked for his father for MANY years. Garry has always been a pleasant guy and seems like a good person but that does NOT excuse him from breaking the law. And driving on suspended license, speeding, no proof of insurance and a tag not matching your vehicle is all illegal. He should be treated like any other citizen that committed these offenses.

Poor ole Mike.......................he's a company man, but such a nice guy, and I'm sure it wasn't his decision to exclude the report..................................................but I guess if you're gonna ask anyone, he'd be the man to ask............................................

Oh I agree completely! I know him too but what's right is right and what's wrong is wrong. It comes with the territory and maybe in this situation its unfortunate too!

No wrongs make any rights. However, there are always two sides to every story and Commissioner Fricks has, in fact, done a good job for Floyd County for a number of years. I think it safe to say that we have all made a mistake in our lifetime that we regreat or wish we could take back. While most of us do not seek or hold a political office, it is human for us to mess up, or as he said "screw up." I'm just glad that he admitted it, faced it and was honest. That's something a lot of politicians wouldn't do. So, no, he wasn't right, but, he's one of us, someone who messes up and makes mistakes and all we can do is forgive him and hope that these mistakes are learned from by not only him bout our fellow commissioners as well. Let's not be so judgemental!

Let's not be so judgemental! had this been one of the county's law enforcement officers, would Fricks be willing to publicly call the officer's actions "a mistake" and ask that the officer keep his/her job??? I doubt it...........................this is the man that holds the purse strings for all of the deputies and police in Floyd County................................................do we really want someone with such a lack of regard for the law that they're willing to commit a jailable offense EVERY DAY for 7 years to be the one deciding what the police get and don't get????????????????? The fact that he waited 8 months to get a title on a vehicle is yet another violation of the law............................................is it murder? well of course not, but where do we set the standard?????? Are we to decide "well, he's a good guy, so he deserves one mistake" ? and do we consider getting caught once, after breaking the law every day for seven years a single mistake??????? And since he KNEW that he didn't have a license, what was he looking for in his wallet when he was pulled over??????????? The only answer could be that he was hoping the officer would see the "county commissioner" on his gov't i.d. and back off.....................................................thank god that Calhoun has good police (probably trained at floyd county lol ).....................................

I did not say he was right. I did say, however, that we all screw up, as I am sure you have many times in your life. People in glass houses should not throw stones. Learning how to spell and type correctly would be a good thing for you to do, too.
