Amen, ROP.  The Thanksgiving Day Massacre at WGST spelled the beginning of the end of true local talk radio in the ATL market.  Everybody else is syndicated.  Kimmer talked about Atlanta issues and more importantly made Atlanta laugh.

I picked up his station one day comming home from work. Locked it in on the radio.  My kid went off to college in Atl. so it then became nessary listening. That brodcast he and Keith Kialen did with that guy on the crane and that fireman dropping down out of the helo got those guys a raise, he was for the troops, charities and the common man. Clear Channel bought them out and things went to a fruit basket. Last I was able to read, he is fine........had some offers, decided to play some golf and ride his bike................he made a lot of money for that station.

yes, that's right.  made a lot of money for tons of charitable causes.  I would pay $$ to have a tape of Kimmer and Keith Kalland (that was the spelling, BTW) narrating the crane rescue.  That was amazing radio.  I would argue, better than watching it on TV.

Rodney Ho, radio blogger for the AJC, occasionally posts on Kimmer.  He's moved to Mass. as I understand it, as you said, playing a lot of golf.  Keith Kalland of course passed away in about 2003 or so as I recall.  Jim Gossett (the newsmaker line) left when they fired Kari Dean from the news anchor chair.  Wayne No Offense got fired.  Pete Davis got fired.  Pete and Wayne had a brief stint with a weekend show on another weak AM station.  Now Wayne's doing traffic on True Oldies 106.7...interesting that Randy Cook is still with WGST while Spiff is doing oldies at True Oldies 106.7.

I will be the first to say that the downhill slide started when they killed the 105.7 FM simulcast.  In order not to interfere with Cuban stations, 640 AM is a highly directional signal all day, and can only be heard inside the perimeter at night.  The 105.7 FM signal brought the programming very clearly to us up here and all over the northern part of the state.  So they killed in the 105.7 simulcast in about 2000 (I heard the change happen right in the middle of the day on a Friday - Kimmer himself mentioned at the top of his show that they had just found out about it right as it happened.)  105.7 went on to be "Mix" then "Cool" - the oldies format that replace Fox97 when they went hip-hop - and finally "Viva" for all the illegals to listen to.  From there things went downhill...you could just tell they weren't interested in being a major contender in the news talk format.  Firing all the local talent (was that in 05 or 06?) was a cost-cutting measure, even though they had to pay all the talent thru the end of their contracts, at least they weren't using up station resources.  Now they have one local show per day.  Still makes me mad just to think about the whole thing.  I wish Pete Davis would set up a website and just provide all his amazing sports commentary from there.  I don't give a flip about sports, but you better believe I listened to Pete Davis's reports every single day.

I listened to the downhill slide. Kimmer made men aware of prostate cancer. . I called 640 when they did this. I have 3 radios down here, tuned to different stations (lazy), and told them I was unplugging it.

Don't be jealous guys but we are in Clearwater, FL tonight. Delivered a popup camper down to Brandon FL today. Since my son lives in Largo, we wanted to stay longer than just drop off and head back to Rome.

On the way down, trying to pull in any good stations, we pick up Moby in the morning on a station. Only to find the following:

Moby gets bitten by a snake - The “yeah baby!” host now heard on South 107, WNGC-FM and 92.5/The Bear thought it was wise Monday to try to catch a copperhead snake in his driveway. He did nab it but it also nipped him on the right hand forefinger, forcing him to get anti-venom treatment. ( I wonder if the nit-whit attempted to catch the copperhead bare handed ? )

According to him coming on the air (late) this morning, he is doing just fine. And yes, he was attempting bare handed. He thought he could use one hand to lure the snake one way then grab it behind its head, oooopppps snake moved faster than Moby. LOL. But he is fine.
